  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, as you might be able to tell from my name, I like St. Teresa of Avila.

Also,
St. John of the Cross
St. Therese of Lisieux
Our Lady of Perpetual Hope
Teresa of Calcutta (who I'm sure will be canonized, in time)
St. Thomas Aquinas (son is named after him)

I don't really know a lot about different saints yet. I am planning on going through the saint of the day with Baby when I start staying at home with him. It will be a good learning experience for us all.

I have thought about naming my first son "Thomas Aquinas". My name is Thomas (Thomas Francis) and I want to continue that tradition (my father and grandfather were also named Thomas). However, I also want to name a son John Chrysostom but we need to keep in mind the torture that my kids will have to endure once they start school :p Then there is the fact that I want to name another son Dominic and we see that it looks like my wife and I might wind up having a lot of children :D And with my luck... it'll be all girls, cause we don't have many names picked out for the girls.

:D Well, he is Charles Thomas - Charles after his dad, granddad, and great-granddad, but also St. Charles Borromeo; Thomas is for St. Thomas Aquinas, because his due date fell near St. Thomas's feast day & DH is a philosophy nut. So, why not a boy named Thomas John or John Thomas? You can have both saints!! :) Or have lots of boys. ;)

For the next boy (we have a magical propensity for having lots of boys on both sides of the family), we have no clue, but one of his (their) names will be a significant saints' name. Maybe Francis, since I really like St. Francis.

Our first girl will be Annamarie Margaret, so there you have St. Ann, St. Mary, and. St. Margaret. I also would like to have a girl named Abigail (St. Abigail).

Well, we've thought about "Thomas Patrick" and "Dominic Joseph" and "John Augustine", so those are all possibilites (or combinations thereof). We do have one girls name chosen "Catherine" (maybe with a K, but my wife doesn't like "Kathy" as a nickname).

Yah, we're going to have a lot of children... in my wife's family, having twins seems to be genetic and it just finished skipping a generation, which means... we may get them all in one or two go's :p

As for the Francis name... I appreciate it now, but I caught a lot of flack when I was younger, especially when I was in a class with a girl named Frances. No matter how much I tried to explain that my name was spelled with an "i" rather than an "e"... didn't seem to matter... argh... I hated grade school through high school.

Here are my favorite Saints:

St. Michael the Archangel
St. Augustine of Hippo
St. Benedict of Nursia
St. Therese of Lisieux

...and of course our Blessed Mother. :)

I guess I should introduce myself, since this is my first post on Christian Forums. I am a recent convert to the Catholic faith, and I was just confirmed this Easter! My parents (and everyone else in my family) are Protestant, but they took my conversion very well... It is still always interesting seeing my Rosaries around the house.

I'm glad to be home in Rome. :)

One hundred fourteen years ago today, on the feast of the Annunciation, Therese Martin entered the Carmel of Lisieux. Like this year, Easter had been early and the feast of the Annunciation was pushed back to April 9th.

I know this because, for my wife's birthday three weeks ago I went to our local Catholic bookstore and found almost immediately just the right gift:Therese and Lisieux by Pierre Descouvemont (Editor), et al
(Hardcover - 1996). She has thanked me again and again for this book, which any devotee of St. Therese would want to have, since it is full of never before published photographs. Among these are several
pictures of her as St. Joan of Arc in a play she herself wrote for the convent, photos of paintings, drawings and other artwork she did for the convent, all of it excellent. Also very interesting are short
biographies and photos of many of the nuns who were among the dramatis personae of her own story. This book is out of print, but odd copies may still be available in the book shops. It is $65.

"Give and it shall be given unto you...." Over a week ago some wretched laryngitis/bronchitis fastened itself upon me (and hasn't released its hold yet despite being smacked with lots of amoxicillin-) and to console me, Bernie read to me from Therese's autobiography.
To this point I have always readily indulged Theresean spirituality in my wife and daughter, but frankly could never see the point for myself. What does the Little Flower have to say to a man on the verge of senesence? Plenty as it turns out.

Christian 2002,

I like your answer best because it is so comprehensive. One of the oldest feasts in the Church is the Feast of All Saints, which includes everyone holy to the Lord, *all of whom are living.* On November 1st Catholics will say to one another, only half-humorously, "Happy feastday!"
You are right with Our Lord who says that God is a God of the living and not of the dead. Dead saints! What a concept. How could there be any dead saints? All are alive to Him, including everyone listed above. If not, then how do they obtain answers to our prayers?

Mark 12
25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?
27 He is not God of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong."
