  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Generally NIV. A bunch of international scholars did the translations, so definitely some qualified people doing their stuff to compile it ;)

I can't stand The Message, though. It seems everything is so paraphrased that it's easy to read meanings into it that were never intended in the first place.

I'm with you on that one...it takes out all the poetry, and awe from the bible.

I did once run into a version of a bible I would love to get my hands on now called something like Bible for streetkids. It was written durring the hippie movment and has alot of stuff like " and God saw it and said it was groovey man!"

I mostly use the NASB. I read NIV sometimes and the KJV and the MKJV on occassion. Sometimes I line them up and compare.

e-sword is awesome software for looking at multiple versions.

I agree with the comments about The Message. Too much paraphrasing means you get the translators message and not necessarily God's.

As for me......... I regularly use a variety of versions... from NIV to New King James to the Amplified Bible I gave my husband as a Christmas gift 2 years ago. We were given The Message as a gift.. I enjoy reading it but only when I can also read another translation as well, for all the same reasons that have already been stated.

I have e-sword as well and use it all the time, what a great tool! My favorite version on e-sword is RSV.. but I often check GOD'S Word, Bible in Basic English and the Good News Bible too.

Can one ever have too many bibles?

Blessings,

I grew up on NIV, but love the NASB that was given to me as a gift while doing a Kay Arthur course. I also have other KJV, CEV, NKJV, and NLT and the Message to name a few. I love spreading them out during study and research, but it sure takes up less space using the internet tools available.

Blessings in Christ,
D

I have over 29 versions on e-Sword and my hard copy is KJV, which my mom gave to me on Christmas when I was 14. I like comparing them. I won't study from the NIV, it is too far from a word for word translation, but it is wonderful to read from. I am even learning to read the Greek and Hebrew. I guess I don't really have a favorite.

My favorite version is the Interlineal (Hebrew/Greek/English) version, because it explains a lot of the orginial word meanings, where the depth of those words can get lost in translation, but I usually use either the Amplified Bible or e-sword (KJV w/ Strong's #s, and check the definations for a lot of words, or compare with YLT & ALT) for studying and reading, because they can be a little easier to follow.

So hard to pick only one favorite, I've got a bookshelf filled with nearly every version!

I'm extremely partial to the JB and the NJB these days - in fact, I tend to bring my NJB to Bible Studies at church, for the sake of variety, because I know that half the folks there will have an NRSV, with the rest being a sprinkling of NIVs and the occasional NKJV.

Generally i lik a Segond's version (french equivalent for, say, sth between KJV and NKJV, a litteral version). I use a NKJV, that's interesting to compare englidh/french versions ; i've also an NIV but i don't read in it. At times i like to look in the greek. I've also begun with the recent Schlachter (german) version... but that's too early to say i find new things...

As a rule, i would use litteral versions because otherwise the text can be half-interpreted by translators, which is not their job...
