Sigur ros, krafterk, and joy electric, and several others are close, but I'm gonna have to say starflyer 59. You're my buddy if you've even heard of them.

My reasons:
1.) They've changed styles radically over the years. It's almost like there's three or four different bands playing under the same name.
2.) Every style (or sound) they've put out is a work of pure originality. And I am in favor with every one.
3.) They're the first and longest-lasting band on tooth&nail records. That has to mean something. Maybe it actually doesn't mean anything, but there remains a remote possibility that this reason holds unbelievable power.
4.) Jason Martin (founder, guitars, vocals) has a brother (Ronnie) who founded joy electric, and Jeff Cloud (bass) created and runs my favorite record label, velvet blue music. And J. Martin produces a number of their releases. Which I've bought almost 20 of in the past year. And J. Martin created bon voyage with his wife.

I recommend getting easy come easy go (greatest hit/chronologically ordered compliation with scattered b-sides and live stuff), leave here a stranger (10 timeless tracks of lo-fi goodness), and old (the soaring, majestic product of 4 musical geniuses, J. Martin, Cloud. Dick Swift, and Frank Lenz).

There are so many bands, across so many different genres, I couldn't even begin to start picking out the ones I like more than the others. I can just pick out the ones that I think have/had the greatest potential or unique sound, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're my favorite. I don't typically get hung up on a particular band and such. I just let the music flow through me, if you'll excuse the lame new age analogy. I go through periods of time where I'll look into a particular type of music for a while, and try to expand the number of artists I listen to in that category (right now I'm really wanting to start listening to Hüsker Dü and Agent Orange-type bands; age doesn't matter). Of course, if I had to pick just two, you'd probably find them in the Industrial section. If I had to choose just two whose music left a lasting impression, I'd probably have to say Stabbing Westward and Skinny Puppy.

Stabbing Westward's guitar work is so sharp and clean, despite the fact they play Industrial Metal (which tends to amp up the distortion), that it's almost like a knife cutting into you. The only other band I've found that's that crisp is KMFDM. Taking a listen to the song "Torn Apart" from their Darkest Days CD is just amazing. On top of that, the lyrics are incredibly powerful. Dark, moody, introspective, metaphoric, at times bittersweet, and in the case of the song "Sleep", emotionally crippling in it's depiction of a victim of sexual abuse (like "Janie's Got A Gun" without the 'happy' ending).

Skinny Puppy, on the other hand, makes an excellent case for dissonance. The samples, loops, and sound clips interjected relentlessly throughout their music really gives your brain a workout. It's definitely an aquired taste, depending on just which song you choose to listen to-some are melodic and ambient, like "Worlock" or "Assimilate" (or, off their newest album, "I'mmortal" or "Empte"), where others are pure chaos, such as "Convulsion" or "Who's Laughing Now?". Even in the midst of that noise, you can hear orchestration, like a train running off its tracks but yet still managing to stay upright by some unknown force.

It really depends on how I feel at the moment. There are times when I might say Radiohead, or Miles Davis, or Bob Dylan. But I usually keep coming back to the Velvet Underground. No band, IMO, has been as creative, versatile, and influential as VU has. Rock music as an art form would be poorer without VU than without any other single band/artist in its history.

Haven't seen you mention VU for a while, Jordan! :D

I as well would have to say my fave band changes with my mood. Sometimes U2, sometimes DMB, sometimes other ones. If I had to pick one I'd probably say U2, because their music and mysteriously spiritual lyrics have intrigued me for a long while since I started listening to them. :)

The reason is that their music is so melodic, rhythmic, artistic, and they have great lyrics. No two albums are the same, and Geddy is the best bass player, Alex is the best guitarist, and Neil is the best drummer. What do you mean "in your opinion" , that's what you wanted isn't it?:p

Come on, someone say AFI! Okay, half the time I can't figure out what Davey is saying without looking up the lyrics...but hey, he's hot and has awesome vocals.
Evanescence...Amy Lee has such a beautifully mournful voice
The Rasmus...a dude with feathers poking out of his hair can't go wrong, right?
Linkin Park...
Coheed and Cambria...
