  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have to weigh in at weight watchers on Mondays so each week before I fast before going in and weighing in. But it isn't for religious reasons, but I am sure God is pleased because I endure it each week.

How intense is the exercise? If it's extremely intense, then fasting probably isn't a good idea. But I think mild exercise is okay. It really depends on the individual. If you start feeling dizzy or light-headed while exercising, I think it's a good idea to stop. Also consider juice fasting so that you have some form of sustenance while exercising, unless you want to strictly water fast. God bless.

During this month of Ramadan, I fast from sunrise to sunset(no drink and no food). I eat my break fast meal(iftar), then pray and then go to the gym an hour later. Depending on the level of fasting you're doing, depends on what you do in the gym. When I'm not fasting, I normally hit the gym 2-3 times a day, spending about 60-90 each time. Now that Ramadan is here, I just go to the gym for an hour lifting weights and no cardio. Keep it simple so as not to hurt yourself in the long run.

Hi Kevin,

If you are using a partial fast, like the Daniel Fast, for your method of fasting - the exercise is okay. If you are doing a normal fast (water only) then you'll want to listen to your body and use wisdom about exercise.

Fasting should never bring harm to the body. So be wise and join your spirit with the Holy Spirit who will lead you as you open your heart to Him.

Unless you're in a coma it's hard not to get some sort of exercise .

On short fasts , 1-2 days it shouldn't be a problem for most , excepting those with heart conditions or unstable blood sugar regulation , such should use extreme caution when considering a fast , especially a water one .

During extended water fasts of 7 days or more , one normally feels a bit weak , and prone to be dizzy or light headed especially when doing anything strenuous .

It is recommended that during extended water fasts that one take it easy , avoid heavy lifting , and swift , or sudden movements , but this also does vary with the individual and their level of tolerance and conditioning .

The issue of how much activity is called for on a fast is controversial. Natural Hygienists in the Herbert Shelton tradition insist that all fasters absolutely must have complete bed rest, with no books, no TV, no visitors, no enemas, no exercise, no music, and of course no food, not even a cup of herb tea. In my many years of conducting people through fasts, I have yet to meet an individual that could mentally tolerate this degree of nothingness. It is too drastic a withdrawal from all the stimulation people are used to in the twentieth century. I still don"t know how Shelton managed to make his patients do it, but my guess is that he must have been a very intimidating guy. Shelton was a body builder of some renown in his day. I bet Shelton"s patients kept a few books and magazines under their mattress and only took them out when he wasn"t looking. If I had tried to enforced this type of sensory deprivation, I know my patients would have grabbed their clothes and run, vowing never to fast again. I think it is most important that people fast, and that they feel so good about the experience that they want to do it again, and talk all their sick friends into doing the same thing.

Being new to fasting I have only done it a few times and for no longer than 3 days. I continued to drink and do my regular exercise which consists of cardio one day and toning the next. No problems arose when relying on the spirit. Last time I did get light headed but I was also distracted.

Listen to the Holy Spirit as you fast, you will know what is okay.

I was thinking about doing a fruit, vegtables, water and juice fast, while exersicing on a treadmill, for maybe a month or so.I think with juice, water and fruit would be ok.I'm planing on doing this for a month or 2.I want to clean my system out,of junk and get closure to God.Also when I was fasting a few years ago,I ate nothing for my fast,I would go for walks,I was okay.Make sure you at least drink water, because on one of my fastings I didn't,got sick, screwed up my fasting.

Fruits, vegetables, juice and water sounds like a good idea. Cleaning out your system is an added bonus. This would be a hard fast requiring reliance on God to stay with it. I have fasted without food but never without coffee, juice or milk.
Good luck!
How was your fast with coffee.

It was fine, I did find that after a few cups I needed something different, especially on the second day. That's when I added juice and milk. I drink a lot of coffee anyway and even when not fasting, if I drink to much on an empty stomach it makes my stomach upset. The milk and juice offset the upset.

Since you will be eating fruit, vegetables, juice and water You will just be like someone on a diet so that would not affect exercise in any way. Even if you were doing a juice fast you would not need to worry about any exercise.
People doing a complete fast (total abstinence from food and water) and those doing a water fast (abstaining from food only while drinking water) are those who have to make sure they do not over exert themselves.
