  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In "the holy Scriptures", we find "false prophets", "false witness(es)" "false apostles", "false teachers", etc., etc., ...

Who are the "false brethren" that are referred to in Gal.2:4?
"And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:"

"Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek." Acts 16:3

vs.

"Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I. Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; ..." 2 Corinthians 11:22-26

"Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also. And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised: And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:..." Galatians 2:1-4

"...And that because..."

Perhaps these false brethren were those promoting/declaring that circumcision was necessary for salvation, i.e., the Law of Moses-hence Paul refused to circumcize Titus. And perhaps one of the reasons Paul took Titus with him was that Titus was a Greek, a Gentile, and would thus serve as an "object lesson" to the Jews of the doctrine that, in this dispensation, Gentiles were saved apart from the Law of Moses, which was all the Jews he was addressing knew.

In Christ,

In Adam Clarke's commentary on 1 Corinthians 11:26 he defines false brethren:
"False brethren—Persons who joined themselves to the Church, pretending faith in Christ, but intending to act as spies, hoping to get some matter of accusation against him. He no doubt suffered much also from apostates."

Specifically at Gal. 2:4, he says this:
"To spy out our liberty—The Judaizing brethren got introduced into the assembly of the apostles, in order to find out what was implied in the liberty of the Gospel, that they might know the better how to oppose St. Paul and his fellows in their preaching Christ to the Gentiles, and admitting them into the Church without obliging them to observe circumcision and keep the law.

The apostle saw that while such men were in the assembly it was better not to mention his mission among the Gentiles, lest, by means of those false brethren, occasion should be given to altercations and disputes; therefore he took the opportunity, by private conferences, to set the whole matter, relative to his work among the Gentiles, before the chief of the apostles."

Scripture favors this explanation.

That sounds correct. I believe the Gold Dome is now sitting over where they are "resting" along with their Santuary.

1 thess 2:15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God and are contrary to all men, 16 forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved, so as always to fill up [the measure of] their sins; but the wrath has come upon them to the uttermost

well said John!

The "false brethren"/"grievous wolves" today "enter in among" us, seek to "bite and devour" and we are to "take heed that ye be not consumed one of another". The "false brethren" today do not attack or dispute the character or work of our Lord but instead attack or dispute about rules, regulations, or ordinances and are trying to lead brothers and sisters in Christ back to living under/into bondage. They have either forgotten the "liberty" we now have in Christ or they do not know of "our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus."

p.s.---you're so funny John, a fair-weather Cardinals fan...LOL
what I couldn't stand is, if they win this play-off series and then lose the world series or play in the world series and not win a single game of the series...remember that one time? I remember it twice... hee hee...YUCK! How about those St. Louis Rams...yahoo...lose in the last minute and a half...grrrrrr

(Gal.5:1-10)
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
This persuasion cometh not of Him That calleth you.
A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.

The "liberty" we have "in Christ" is the foundation in which we stand. When some quote the passage "ye are fallen from grace"...the "false brethren" are trying to make you believe that you are no longer saved. "Fallen from grace" NOT "fallen from" redemption.

The "false brethren" walk away from the liberty in Christ.
There is no falling from the standing freedom we have in Christ Jesus.
Why do so many want to be given innocency instead of righteousness?
They walk away from lack of understanding the "liberty" we now have.

A wise man once said to me: 'Many see the bars while others see the stars.'

(2Kings 23:5)
"And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven."

"idolatrous priests" = priests NOT APPOINTED BY GOD, but appointed by man.

In this "dispensation", is God appointing any one to be priests?

Escellent point, found in him. And the answer is NO.

The "nation of Priests" was identified in scripture as the NATION of Israel. THAT program , of PRIESTS, has been SET ASIDE.

God is NOW dealing with, and building, a BODY of BELIEVERS in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ as sufficient payment for THEIR reconciliation to God.

And THATs the "rest of the story"...as Paul Harvey would say!
