Fair pay

I've finally had to concede that my free proofreaders and my own eyes are not cutting for proofreading my manuscript for a book I've self-published. I'm making some changes to it and need a thorough proofing, so I've asked a college student who's in my Bible study to do it. When I emailed her I asked her to think of a fair fee and I'd do the same and we'd come up with something we could both live with.

I want to be fair and would appreciate your opinions on a fair rate of pay.

10 to 15 bucks an hour for someone hired through a temp service. 15 to 30 for your run-of-the-mill freelancer. 25 and up for major players.

Ten bucks an hour (maybe less, depending on qualifications) isn't bad for some college kid you grabbed off the street. How many words is your manuscript? Some proofreaders work on a per-word or per-page basis, as well. Or maybe she'll do the whole thing for a lump sum.
