Explicit lyrics vs. edits- What's your take?

though i do not like all the vulgarity in, for instance, all these rap songs, (sorry, just not a big fan of rap) it BUGS THE **** OUT OF ME to hear BEEEEEEEEEEEEP every two seconds...it ruins the songs, if they are good songs, that is...so like, the songs w/ maybe a few cuss words, when they bleep those out i just wanna...GRRRRR!!! yeah, but it makes me mad w/ the blepping-out-of-lyrics...even if they are bad...but thats just me.

wow i didnt know that word was a cuss word...im sorry guys...i didnt say the bad one, i promise. aw, now i feel kinda hypocritical...kinda...in a way. SEE THATS MY POINT! if someone wants to voice their opinion by using the "C" word...(in my eyes, not a cuss word) LET THEM!!! aw, but nevertheless, i am terribly sorry & i wont ever use that word again...haha, yes i will. but not here! K? k...

As a musician/songwriter myself, I think that artists who put out "edited versions" of explicit product show no integrity. If it was so important for them to put those lyrics in, why would they be willing to censor themselves?

I'll tell you why... To sell more product (especially to minors who can't buy parental advisory product) and to get airplay- which means to sell more product!

If the government said, "You can't cuss on your CD, so we're going to censor it", those same artists would be ready for lawsuits with the AFL-CIO saying that they're losing their right to free speech. BUT... it's O.K. for us to censor ourselves, so we can sell more product and make more money!

I think that all these explicit artists that have edited versions are prostituting themselves and selling out by doing this and I won't support them by buying the "clean" version!

What do you think?

If bands want to release a "clean" version in addition to their "explicit" album they can just offer a completely lyric-free elevator muzak disk.

Seriously though, I completely disagree with censored releases. I also know that it's not the band's decision alone and, due to contract specifications in many, many cases, not the band's decision at all. All of these previous posts are right on in saying it's a money issue, most record labels do not care in the least about their bands or customers. The censorship is not solely limited to explicit lyrics but also to "marketing" decisions as well. Elektra wouldn't allow Third Eye Blind to include a song they wrote on their second album because they didn't believe the song "fit with the band's image". What kind of poo is that?

I think a lot of bands don't mind having their lyrics altered/censored may be because they either a) aknowledge that their lyrics are incidental in comparison to their lyrics, or b) don't reckon that Joe Public pays much attention to or cares much about lyrics.

I don't care for edited versions at all. I don't mind them making edited copies for the radio, but that's the only place it should be edited for. Otherwise, you should leave the song just how it was when the writer wrote it.

Personally I don't like it when music artists use lyrics that i have objections against. Such can be lyrics that disparage women as if they were just toys for men to play with, lyrics that depict graphic violence, obscene or sexually explicit lyrics, as well as anti-Christian lyrics ... and by that I mean the kind where God is shamelessly blasphemed. I also don't like lyrics that glorify sin.

I will listen to music with cusswords in it (excluding the word "damn" and other forms of cursing because only God has the authority to curse and besides that, He expects us to bless those who curse us), provided that they don't occur too often and are not emphasized.

I think edited versions of CD's are ridiculous! If they have to swear in the first place then it shouldn't be for kids. Not only that, but there's really no point if everybody already knows what they are saying anyway just based on the content right before they swear. Any groups who have music like should have a "Must be 21 or older" sign on it to listen. It's corrupting our minds and civilization as we know it.
