  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I just looked up the hours of reconciliation for my church but I need some reassurance/support to actually go to it this Saturday. As I've said before, I haven't gone to Reconciliation for ages. Can anyone here refresh me about what I'm supposed to do? When I went in the past it was with my Catholic school--> I'm not familiar with going as 'an adult'--> do people just line up and wait their turn for Confession? What will the priest expect me to say? Do I need to memorise anything? (I'm going to print off the Holy Rosary page on here too).

Also, is anyone here willing to share with me your experiences with Reconciliation?

Thank you in advance.

Here are the steps performed during confession:

Rite of Reconciliation

Priest: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Penitent: Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (how long?) since my last confession, and these are my sins: (Confess your sins.)

Priest: (gives you a penance)

Penitent: (Pray the Act of contrition)

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they have offended You, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen.

Priest: (gives you absolution)

Penitent: (recite or do your penance as soon as possible.)

********************************************
Typically you show up for confession and there are pews or chairs in the area of the confessional. Just get in line, pray, reflect and prepare for your confession.

Some people write down the sins they need to confess, some reflect beforehand and then receite them to the Priest. It depends on your preference.

Some items to reflect on before confession based off the 10 commandments
Hope this helps!

Peace to you....

Also, don't worry. Priests are generally very helpful. If you have problems/questions just tell the priest it's been awhile since the last time you've been to confession and you need some help. Most priests are more than willing to talk you through it. Remember, God is love and mercy itself. The catechism tells us the priest is the servant, not the master of God's mercy. The confessional is the place where I can feel the mercy of Jesus most strongly.

I remember my first time back as an adult. I was terrified. It had been 10 years since I had gone to confession and well - that was a lot of sins to confess! I made an appointment with the priest that had been appointed to the church where I went to college. We had become friends and I felt pretty comfortable with him. Still, it is nerve racking to tell someone all the things that you have done wrong. I met with him on a weekday evening at the rectory. We went in sat down ont he couch and I started my confession. I had never before had a fae to face confession. As a child I remmeber climbing into the big wooden confessional box and the little screen being opened. This time was awesome. I felt so much better afterwards and he really helped me to work through some issues that I was having with my biological father and other things that were going on in my life as a college student. We talked for nearly two hours. I never felt so at peace with myself. It was the best thing that i could have done. It gave me a renewed sense of my faith and made me look at things in a completely different way. I also loved that fact the my penance with him was never say 30 Hail Mary and 100 Our Father :) It was always an action that would benefit me and the situation that I was in. If you have the chance to do a face to face confession I would highly recommend it. You don't have to worry about messing up because the priest will understand that it has been awhile and will help you along. Many confessionals have the act of contrition printed on a card for you, but it wouldn't hurt to take it along just in case.
