The kings of Egypt were thought to be the earthly embodiment of gods, divine pharaohs. If the gods were happy, nature -- weather and food supply -- would be predictable. If pharaoh did his job, his people would be protected. Life would be stable. The Hebrews were enslaved by pharaohs.
We fight with worldview and its gods. We are enslaved by gods of consumerism, celebrities, wealth, technology, sex, pride, entitlement, excitement, entertainment.
Pharaoh could not protect his land or people or plagues -- he was powerless -- which was an attack on his claim to power. Still he would not let his people go. Even his own son died. All his claims of power were broken.
We enslave ourselves to false gods, hold ourselves back to give some of ourselves to another god.
Only God is a liberator.
