Okay. Forgive me for being obtuse: what is holding you back from volunteering for the Peace Corps?

If something tangible (i.e., other than self-doubt) is holding you back, are you taking steps to remove that obstacle?

God has put something on your heart to do, and I pray that you'll take the steps to fulfill your goal.

Dude it's not that difficult. Reitterating what another poster mentioned, why has it been twelve years?
LTI, do you have a college degree? If so then you can make a load of money teaching English in South Korea. It's what I am doing now. The cost of living is low and it is a very nice and safe place to live. It's all inclusive living accomodations and free transportation to Korea and home when you are finished with your contract. I love my job and I am saving 10 times what I could back in the "Land of the Taxes".

Rather than just journalling, why don't you take some time to acively pursue your goals. Taking action can be really motivating. "If it is to be, it is up to me." I understand that changing jobs is a big deal, and saving for a car won't happen overnight, but some of the other things you want to do are feasible right now. Go ahead and clean and organize your apartment. It will be one less thing to think about. Get the rabbit you've been thinking about for years. What's stopping you? Btw, I think Hampton's a great name for a bunny.

Getting a Peace Corps assignment is very competitive. I recall reading that only 25% of applicants are accepted. But don't quote me on that percentage; I am just going by memory.

Anyway, no matter what percentage I quote, the fact is that getting accepted and getting an assignment is very competitive.

Before I can apply to be a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer I have to have some skills, education and experience that a host country would need. It took me a long time just to figure out how to become a competitive applicant, and, more importantly, how to have something to offer. I was an undeclared major for ten years.

Meanwhile, money and my academic history have slowed my progress (see [thread=2579688]this thread[/thread]).

I accepted a long time ago that I was going to be running a marathon, not a sprint.

I have run the marathon as diligently as could be asked of me. However, in the last several years heat exhaustion and dehydration have set in and left me weak and disoriented.

This thread is about shaking off that heat exhaustion and dehydration, getting focused on the goal again, and getting back on pace.

I always felt that I am not ready for the responsibility.

But now that I have moved into the apartment that I think is going to be my permanent home until I finish school, now that I have a reliable car, and now that I have a greater income, I feel ready for the responsibility.

However, I lost interest and motivation. My best friend whom I have not spoken with since last fall was always asking me about it and encouraging me. There has been a void there.

But now that you and Beauty4Ashes have endorsed it, I am starting to like the idea again. I will likely start educating myself more and shopping around as early as next week.

I can relate to what you are experiencing. We all need SOMETHING in life that is our passions, something that channels our energies and gives us a reason to get up and keep going day after day. For those of us who are single, well, we don't have a mate, or quite often, children to come home to, so it is often just up to us to figure out what to do with life. Many of us tend to seek that satisfaction through career.

I'm afraid I don't have an answer; I am asking myself the same questions. Just know that you are no the only one experiencing this.

Hey Deliberate Tourist,

I have thought about teaching English overseas from time to time, but never followed through with it. I would love to hear more about your experiences, what kind of special skills, background, etc., was required for you to be accepted, and the pros and cons you have experienced. Are you native Korean or originally from North America or Europe?

If you feel like it, why not start a thread where people can discuss this sort of things with you.

Back to the OP: Tim, man, you sound bored. I have felt the same way, especially after switching to a job that doesn't require the creativity or the intelligence that my previous job did. Lesson learned: I need an outlet for both.

I think you need some outlets. One outlet: to care about something/someone. A pet is a great idea. Second outlet: An intellectual challenge. Whether that's a puzzle (sudoku is inexplicably popular these days) or reading Classic literature or listening to a new type of music or learning all you can about a country you'd like to someday visit (or volunteer in). Something.

Maybe this is your "fallow" period, in which you are resting and recharging. It's not as exciting as the passionate periods, but it's necessary in order to prepare you for the Next Big Thing, whatever that may be. I'm in a fallow period right now. I struggle against it, but I think it's by God's grace that I've got this kind of "down" time because I AM finally doing some of the "minor" things in life that I used to put off.
