On the Edge of Ancient Secrets

On the planet Kaeldon, two science apprentices explored a heavily wooded area on the continent of Marriot. They had just managed to startle another foot-long, salamander-like creature. After thirty-two of them, they had finally become accustomed to surprising them. Number thirty-three was somewhat interesting, though.

"That one was purple!" exclaimed Miss Noshia Tran.

Noshia was a third-year science apprentice specializing in zoology. She was a petite, shapely, yellow-skinned, young woman with long black hair.

Noshia was speaking to Mr. Crendelon Kendall, also a third-year science apprentice specializing in zoology. He was a six-foot tall, well-built, black-skinned, young man with very closely trimmed black hair.

Crendelon asked incredulously, "Look, we've counted fifteen blue, seven red, and ten yellow — now you're telling me there are purple ones?"

"Yep," was Noshia's chipper reply.

As the two forged on, they noticed that the forested area contained strange fruit trees that were each about thirteen feet tall. They consisted of mostly smooth trunks with only their top few feet bearing branches, leaves, and bright yellow fruit.

"Strange," Crendelon pondered, "It looks as though something picked fruit off of that tree, but so far the only animals we've seen would have to wait until it fell to the ground before they could eat it."

"Maybe one of those badger-like creatures got to the fruit," Noshia guessed.

"No, I don't see any claw marks on the trunk," Crendelon reasoned.

The conversation was shattered by a loud "Wugga, wugga! Wugga, wugga!"

After lurching forward several feet, they quickly spun around and spotted a brown, furry animal the size of a juvenile boar.

In response to the scary, quick-spinning action of the humans, the now wide-eyed animal beat a hasty retreat. It looked remarkably like a miniature wooly mammoth; bearing a trunk, small tail, and shaggy brown fur — yet lacking in tusks.

Before either of the explorers could say a word, out stepped a man with extremely long legs. Legs that caused his otherwise regularly proportioned body to tower at least nine feet above the ground. He was wearing the engraved Marriotian skullcap that all adult male Marriotians wore. It was inscribed with a Marriotian pledge in their ancient tongue. Beneath the skullcap he was clean-shaven, as was the rest of his face. The tan-skinned giant calmly picked two pieces of fruit from the previously discussed fruit tree. He took a bite out of one, then dropped the other one to the ground. It was quickly consumed by the miniature wooly mammoth.

Looking down at the explorers and smiling, the giant said, "Hello. I'm sorry if Snaggle startled you two. His favorite activity involves sneaking up on creatures and ‘wuggaing'. Usually they flee, so when you both spun around, well, he got a taste of his own tadsberry."

"What?" replied the explorers in unison, placed at ease by the giant's polite attitude, but confused by his strange saying.

"A taste of his own tadsberry. A ... um ... taste of his own healing herb ... uh ... I think you Trefflians say ‘A taste of his own medicine.'"

Two Shades of Pride

Engines fired. A silver, shrieking craft lifted-off of his Lord's runway, but the craft was his own. In the cockpit sat a large, well-built man. He was wearing various-colored streaks of paint on his face. They were crosshatched in an intricate pattern, and were primarily light greens and oranges. The most curious thing, however, was the actual color of his skin. It was a dark blue. This man was a member of Uriaheel's Azure race. He wore a tight-fitting, black and dark gray uniform. Clasped to the upper chest area, draping around the neck, and covering most of the man's entire backside, was a huge, flowing, black cloak. On the frontal torso region of the uniform was the large image of a pick-ax, the symbol of his home dukedom. It was easy to tell that the uniform had advanced body armor beneath it. He wore black leather gloves and combat boots, and had a large, sheathed sword strapped to his back, as well as a pistol on each hip.

The man set his direction guidance computer and radar, then opened a small drawer on his right. In it were several small cases with different markings on each of them. He studied the various markings, then picked out a specific case. He opened it and removed a flat, mirror-like, round object. Near a slot on his instrument panel, he adjusted several switches, buttons, and slide controls. He placed the object in the slot, and a small liquid crystal display reset to zero. The man then exclaimed, "Yeah, this is it!" The next second, the number on the display jumped to one, and the cockpit was suddenly filled with a myriad of incredible sounds. A fast-paced mixture of highly amplified, modern Kaeldonian eight-string, electric guitars and six-string, electric bass guitars could be heard. These instruments had developed from early acoustic varieties from the advanced peoples of Tamriel Province, Kaeldon. Drums, and modern, computerized synthesizers could also be heard.

In the background the man could hear, "Come in, Tumult. Come in." He quickly pressed a button and the sounds ceased. "Tumult! Come in this instant!"

Tumult picked up a small audiowave (similar to Earth radio) microphone and thumbed a switch, "What is it, Sursay? Has something gone wrong?"

"No, nothing like that. Just remember what I told you, and for our sakes please remember to use caution, don't be reckless, and don't play that crazy music of yours so loud that you can't hear your warning signalers." Tumult's wife, Sursay, said in her typically cautious fashion.

"Yes, yes, yes! Now quit mothering me and get off the air! I want audiowave silence from now on! I must concentrate on the mission!" With that said, Tumult roughly slammed the microphone back into its holder, as his nostrils flared with frustration. Shortly thereafter, he pressed a button and his music began playing again as the liquid crystal display counted away the seconds.

Tumult's craft was now climbing beyond the pull of the planet Uriaheel's gravity, into interplanetary space. His spartan (Spartans are like a cross between an Earth jet and an Earth space shuttle, yet more advanced.) was specifically suited for this type of travel — and for war.

Tumult spotted something on radar. Coming in from behind him was an old Delta-4 spartan. He quickly raised his rear shields and then his forward ones, as he turned on his advanced, battle computer. Anyone could see that his ship carried heavy weaponry and that it was of the highest technical design, yet the old Delta-4 approached him quite nonchalantly. The Delta-4 even altered its trajectory to match that of Tumult, and its speed rapidly closed the gap between them.

Tumult thought, "If I engage in a full-on burn to achieve a high level of speed, these idiots would probably follow me! They seem interested in me for some reason. I'll just wait and see —"

Tumult was interrupted by the other ship's firing of a Feldspar missile — a highly advanced weapon. BOOM! Tumult's ship was struck fiercely in its starboard side. Triple-strength, electro-energy shielding barely managed to protect him against the explosion, which would have otherwise atomized his craft.

Beneath the Firmament

Jacquezar sat atop a grassy hill and stared into the night sky. He looked upon the darkened haze of the ever- present Great Firmament. Sometimes he wished his world was like the world of the Kael, where he would be able to see the stars and planets beyond the thick, world-encompassing cloud. He realized, though, that the atmospheric state of his world was what protected him from too much exposure to Orianus' light, and that it also caused most of the planet to support abundant forests and huge plant and animal life that could not live on Kaeldon because of its weaker, thinner atmosphere. Most of his country's most learned men believed that the atmospheric conditions explained why the members of his race could live more than a thousand years, while the people that were on Kaeldon lived a hundred, if they were lucky. The Holy Book had described those on the mother planet, Earth, as living nearly this long before the great flood that forever changed the weather of that planet to a condition similar to that of Kaeldon. According to the history of Jacquezar's people, the El-Elar, they found the underground portal to this world several hundred years after their ancient ancestor, Noah, had left the ark after the Earth's flood to begin anew. Somehow a group of Noah's descendants had made their way to Kaeldon, which had a similar atmosphere to that of the post-flood Earth. Then some of those people found the passage to his world, Elhandra. The atmospheric pressure on Elhandra was twice that of Earth or Kaeldon, allowing the large beasts that once roamed the pre-flood Earth to still survive here. If the atmospheric pressure would be less on Elhandra, then the largest of the creatures would be too massive to survive. Their heart would not be able to pump blood to all their extremities. The knowledge of the ancient portal that connected Kaeldon to Earth had been lost to the El-Elar long ago. The original portal from Kaeldon to Elhandra had disappeared thousands of years ago, but another portal was eventually found — the one that Elhyrion and Galesh used.

Jacquezar's mind wandered through several topics until it finally reflected on the one subject it always did — his brother, Elhyrion.

"How long was it again?" he thought. Then he answered himself, "Yes, it has been almost a hundred years since Elhyrion journeyed once again through the portal to make his home on Kaeldon."
