• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I quit in 2005. I used the gum and then got hooked on the gum. I really liked it. I can't remember how many months after that i was done but it was probably several months i do recall slowly cutting the amount down. I can't imagine how anyone can afford. To smoke.

Perseverance and later the permanently damaged bronchia all will have to some extent were a reminder not to fall back. Of course it never hurts to ask the powers that be outside our realm of consciousness for a little help in fighting the addiction.

Nicotine dependency is an addiction plain and simple.

There is a lot of money spent on keeping the person addicted, including the nicotine replacement products that have a less than 20% success rate. If you want a long agonizing withdrawal that keep you strung along and usually does not work use them. (you got addicted to the gum, because it contains nicotine, that's what you are trying to get out of your system).

Allen Carr wrote a book "The Easy Way" which has helped millions.
Also - some self help groups do help support the process.

The highest success rate is how I quit, cold turkey, the nicotine is out of your system in 3 days (physical withdrawals not bad if you are prepared) and after 3 days it is purely a mental battle.

Yes, association with past activities does bring it back. Best to avoid certain situations for a while until it passes (and it will). People no doubt even find intimacy more fulfilling if they are not rushing through to get to that cigarette.

That is where information and a support group help to understand what your triggers are and how to be ready to walk through them.

Yes, no harm in seeking support, although it would be better if someone were not to make a business out of it.

Agreed - and I case you are wondering, I have no affiliation with the suggested support links I posted, just what I used and helped me.

If you were a smoker and quit what was your secret to quitting?

I quit about 2 years ago, my wife and I quit together, it was so expensive. We used On packs, these are still nicotein but like tiny flavored tea bags kept on the gum of the mouth. I couldn't use the chewable gum, I would chew myself into lockjaw. Still using the packs, but they are *a lot* cheaper and cleaner and I presume healthier. We took the money we were using for cigs and started dumping it into a savings account. 2 people at a pack and a half or so a day is 90 packs a month. At $10 a pack, $900 a month...

In 2 years we had over $20,000 in that account... down now from that peak, we have used it for down payment on new car, vacation, replace air conditioner in house that died...

Still using it and it's still growing.

I highly recommend it (quitting by whatever means necessary and dumping the money into savings)

Be careful, if the packs are similar to chewing tobacco, there are lots of reports of mouth cancer.

Yeah, it would definitely be best to be off them entirely.

Here is a comment I got from a friend when I asked about packs:

Sounds like chewing tobacco to me and having known two people who died from cancer of the mouth because of chew that's as dangerous as it can get.
It was horrible too as both these guys had parts of their mouths slowly removed to try to stop the spread. They lost their tongues, their teeth, and much more but it wasn't enough and they died.
Also, since they suck on it they can use it anywhere I would imagine meaning they could be getting a lot of nicotine everyday.

I'd have to disagree since i quit using the gum and prayer.

The snus packets differ from traditional snuff in that the product is pasteurized (rather than fermented as is typical for ”American” snuff), this cuts way down on the tobacco specific nitrosamines which are the main component that cause most cancers.

I see the company making On Packs the same as the big tobacco companies, both seek to get people addicted to nicotine for profit, usually the youth.
