  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

When I came home this morning I found my cat munching on a bird by the back door... that was the 5th one he's had in past 3 days!

What I want to know is, is it safe for cats to catch and eat birds? I'm just worried about him getting worms or something from all these birds he keeps catching.

You need to worry more about the birds, which don't carry worms (he'd be more likely to get them from consuming dirt). Put a small cow bell on your cat, and/or use a device that will inhibit him from jumping in the air with the timing needed to fetch a bird.

Would the cat be in danger if the bird was carrying a disease or something..? I dont know too much about it honestly.. But I will second the idea of a jingle bell or two on his collar. They work pretty well to keep them from being able to really sneak up on anything.

If he's catching birds he's most-likely also catching small rodents, which are more inclined to pass diseases. Avians don't have a long list of ailments communicable to mammals through consumption. If you're worrying about diseases you should have an indoor pet.

And he/she will be happier hunting then just being fed. They have the need to hunt built into them just as people we have the need to worship something.

The thing is, while cats chew and mutilate birds, rarely will they eat them. If they do swallow, they'll frequently go vomit out the contents of their stomach. Killing birds is more of a useless jumping game, and then simply something to gum. Considering the danger nearly every country currently has concerning their bird population, it's vital to do what you can to stop the disadvantageous slaughter of avians. In contrast, killing rodents and snakes is also suitable for food in the feline world, so the cat will be more than fine and happy with a bell and a restraint, which isn't likely to inhibit Kitty from catching any prey but a bird.

Most of my pets are indoors pets (but even indoors it's not worry free from disease or sickness). The dog only goes out on a leash or run, and im always out there with him. Plus, he couldnt sneak up on anything. He's more afraid of mice and birds than hungry for them. :p So that's why I was asking if disease was a worry from birds, because I wasnt sure. Thanks for the good info though.

--> If the cowbell is big enough, he won't be able to leave his yard! :p
