"Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good." --Romans 12
I cannot give a fully satisfying answer for why evil exists in the world, and to the best of my knowledge, no one really can.* What I have found to be more useful is focusing on what we can do about it. Rather than letting ourselves get caught up in the pessimism of a world filled with evil, I think it can be much better to focus on making the best of what we have. This should not entail overlooking evil; remaining ignorant about such issues as forced prostitution and labor exploitation is not good for anyone. I have come to understand that, if we want to end evil, we can't let evil end us. Focusing too much on what's wrong with the world can lead us away from all the good we can do within it.
*(Although the book Cold Case Christianity offers a very good explanation; it's worth a read!)
What can I do about human trafficking? Being educated, raising awareness, and working with or donating to organizations that working against it are all very good things. However, these are all things that I can do for a very limited period of time. I have come to learn that I need to focus more of my attention on simply being good for the people who are already around me. In no way does this detract from what I'm trying to do to work against the evil of the world. This mentality simply allows me to redirect my efforts towards what I can do in the here and now, allowing me to make more of an impact where I am, and safeguards me against some of the stress that naturally accompanies any of these efforts against the darkness in the world.
Thoughts?
