  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have been around here for a long time and one thing I have learned is that not one label fits all. I have been villified by liberals but have also had liberals jump to my defense. I have had some Fundamentalists back me on every debate against Sola Scriptura and I have had Fundamentalists turn tail and run. For the most part Liberals leave me alone because I always strive to be fair and listen, but there have been a few in the past who would follow me to any forum just to hound me.

The funniest thing to me is that while I have known many Fundamentalists admit they were wrong I have never experienced a liberal admit the same thing. And we are supposed to be the closed minded ones.

One last thing; I think it is pretty funny how such a small percentage of us got LeeD to reinstate the Nicene Creed as a measure. Face it there aren't that many of us Fundamentalists, we certainly don't command the interest that many other much larger groups which are more inclined to adhere to Creeds than we are. So tell me how did we do it?

I think that any "Christian" (of any flavor, fundie, moderate, conservie, lib, etc) has the capacity to be a "jerk" about s/he believes... come to think of it, so does anyone who believes anything (religiously or not). So no, I don't believe fundies are always the close-minded ones.

In fact, I don't see an intrinsic problem with the classification of "fundamentalist" the way many seem to. I think that if a person believes in someone or something passionately, s/he has to be convinced that there are "fundamental" aspects to that belief system.

The main question, for me, is not whether or not there are fundamentals or absolutes (to be sure, certain things like the virginal conception and Christ's resurrection count here)... but the main question for me, is what does (and does not) count as a "fundamental" of the Christian faith. I know this is the point at which we'd disagree... but, for the record, "fundamentalism" is not a dirty word to me.

Also, in case anyone wanted to know, I do believe that I have been wrong... many, many times in my past. I have made many sinful decisions and done many sinful things that have had ruinous effects on myself and others. Like everyone else, I'm a sinner who needs to be saved. If I said that I was without sin, I would deceive myself and the truth would not be in me... so yup, there's stuff I'm currently in the wrong on too!

I've been thinking that as well. Who here has spent time twisting Lee's arm to get the Creed reinstated? Not me. I never even considered it. And those who were really vocal in the forums about it were mostly told to shut up or were banned. Whatever this latest move is, it has nothing to do with us. Yes it may allow us a certain amount of freedom that we lost in the past six months. And frankly I intend to enjoy it while it lasts! But it's certainly not like we staged a military coup or something. lol

Paxi I have always enjoyed you, even when we have disagreed. I thank you for making an admission of imperfection I was starting to think that only us "Fundies" could ever be wrong LOL
I'll second that!

As to the Nicene Creed, again my brothers, IT IS NOT THE NICENE CREED!

The Nicene Council only took up the issue of Christ's divinity, and did not adress the Holy Spirit at all.

The final form of the Nicene Creed was formalized at Ephesus, which was conducted in a highly acrimonious and un-Christian like manner, leading to one of the early schism of the Church, whereby Nestor was UNFAIRLY branded a heretic. With Nestor and the repudiation of Antioch by the more politically powerful Alexandria, ended the time of literal Bible interpretation.

SO, in fact, the formalization of the creed we now call "Nicene" took place as the original Fundys were cast out of the Church and replaced by the "allegorical" interpreters of the Scriptures, which we so much oppose.

And of course, all that before the RC got the creed wrong AGAIN, and caused the Great Schism of 1054 by adding the "filoque clause" unilateraly.

In the meantime, the circus that became early Church politics moved on to Chalcedon, where the politics got REALLY nasty and yet, despite it all, we got an even better orthodox set of definitions.

So, anyway, can somebody point me or paste here which one of the many "Nicene Creeds" making the rounds is now the policy at christianforums.com?

Here you go, JR:
http://christianforums.com/t6777178-new-site-wide-rule-nicene-christianity.html

I agree with you it is far from perfect. But I am happy to see something defined here, at least. Prior to the creed being reinstated, JW's, Mormons, and Universalists (and Muslims, for that matter) were fully permitted to promote their beliefs as being "Christian". At least a line has been drawn.
