Ok, I'm only telling you this so all of you have reason to make sport of me.
(Which I deserve).

I was doing my personal taxes last night (4/14) and feeling really cool for getting them done with time to spare (a day is a day after all) when I discovered on my desk two completed tax forms with addressed envelops clipped to them. They were my business' corporate taxes (horrors) which were due 3/15. It seems that when my accountant gave me the tax forms I signed and mailed to payroll taxes and 1099s (thank God, or I'd be in Mexico by now) but neglected to sign and mail my corporate Federal and State taxes.

Do you know what the Federal penalty is for missing the corporate filing date by 30 days ? Its an automatic corporate audit, plus a fine and penalites (to be determined after the audit).

So now my wife is giving me the look (you know the look ?) and worse yet, I've had to endure a lecture from the accountant. ("We worked for 3 weeks on these documents Cosmic, all you had to do was sign them !"). And the crew is afraid that they'll be working for the IRS by August. (The lawyers say this is very unlikely)

Oh, I'm really bolted to wall. (If you know what I mean)

I really need a drink....

(...And I've been cutting back too)

Charlie,

I feel ya, bro. I had some tax problems myslef, years ago, that resulted in a ton of penalties and interest being assessed. I'm still paying on it. I've finally gotten it down to a "managable" amount (still in the thousands, though), after all this time. But actually my experience was, after I got past all the bureaucratic red tape and official letters, and got to a meeting with a real live person (in an office in the Federal Building downtown), it wasn't that bad, and the guy I worked out my payment plan with was actually a real decent guy (for an IRS pencil neck! ;) ). They're people, too, even if they represent the government, and they are usually willing to work out something that is manageable. After all, they want you to be able to pay, not move to Mexico!

Seriously though, I'm sorry,

LOL ...so you actually want us to dog on you? I'm sorry, I can't do it. Though, if I were your wife, I'd be giving you more than just a look. I'd be giving you grief for a long time.

Well there, I guess I did. :) I didn't think you were going to jail, just that you'd be paying a hefty fine.
