European Playstation 3 not so backwards compatible

The Inquirer just got their PAL PS3, and like all European and Australian journalists probably should have done, the first thing they did was test out the software backwards compatability. They tried out:

Success rate? One game out of twelve ran. Eragon. Heh.

The update won't be on the shipped versions. The 1.6 update is *supposed* to be released the day of to 3 days after the europe launch. The emulation software is supposed to upscale the ps2 games better than the emotion chip.

I've also wondered-- wouldn't most people who buy a PS3 now, shortly after release, be the kind of person who also owns a PS2? Why is backwards compatibility such an issue?

Most (myself included) sell their 'old' systems. I have my NES, SNES and even my Atari but that's because my folks love the past and think I'm gonna still play it or that it would be worth money one day. Anyway, the truth is that some people keep the older system for a little while while others don't and it's nice to be able to continually play games that you really enjoy. For me that's GT3 and GT4. As more PS3 titles release less people will play the ps2 ones but sometimes they might wanna pop the old one in just for fun. The consumer doesn't want to feel like they have to throw out the old games if they get the new system.

Well, keep your old system hooked up to the TV . But anyway, people shoulda known the PS3 would be glitchy.
