If you have a good bible translation now, I recomend the KJV, the language can get be pretty powerful at times. Even though it has the problem with the word 'jehovah'.

But if you are looking for something more reliable, or more understandable, I say go NIV, make sure you get one that has alternate translations footnoted though. NRSV is also pretty good.

I have a friend that has a "Hawaiian Translation" it is a funny slangified version. Yet it still keeps the meaning true. You are an aspiring Pastor so your gonna have to understand Greek anyway, no matter what you choose you will be able to check it yourself someday.

I have 4 NIV's 1 KJV, 2 NKJV's, and 1 NASB

I usually use the NIV, but i am moving beyond it. I dont like the KJV or really the NKJV, I do like my NASB but i primarily use that when i want to focus on 1 specific verse or get a clearer meaning on context.

I want something that would be great for study and general reading.

I am allowed to use the term "kid" and mean, "anyone younger than me".

all the kids coming out of my denomination's seminary (an excellent, superior, dandy one) use & really like) the ESV. Good enough for me, I'm going to get one if the price ever comes down.

good, bad, ugly? whats your take on this translation i am currently lookin for a new one.
This is so kool. I was just looking at the ESV at the Calvary Chapel Bible college bookstore today (uh, er, Weds?) ANYWAY, one of the Greek instructors was there, & I asked his opinion. He said is very good mix between NASB for accuracy, and NIV for readability.

Am going to get one as soon as I sell a few livestock in the near future (just jesting!), as it included a free CD with parallel KJV/ESV, Strong's Complete Concordance, Nestle/Aland Greek NT, and a few commentaries I can't remember (the grey-hair thing again).

By the by, when you say *new one*, what's your current one (jest curious)?

Am I the only one still stuck on his King James Version? If you can learn to read this book, you can breeze through books like Ivanhoe, my namesake. Excuse my 'humor', I would not recommend this version for that reason. The true reason is that its what I grew up with and I am not one who likes to change.

Well, you know what they say, "If it was good enough for Paul and Silas . . . " :D

My 19 year old son prefers it, the KJV, to any modern translation! And he's in bible college! Go figure.

My 2 cents:

I prefer the NASB, although I use the NKJV because I use the Geneva Study Bible. That being said, I know a couple of the editors of the ESV and they are great scholars as well as being very Reformed. ESV is a good translation. It's true to the original manuscripts and is easy to read.
