Christian Perspective on Emotional Intelligence
Be very wary of anything that induces you into a preoccupation with yourself, with your feelings, your psychology, preferences, personality and conduct. God tells us in His word that He is not working to make us more and more who
we are naturally but more and more like
Jesus Christ.
Romans 8:29
29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;
Romans 14:7-9
7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself.
8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.
9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.
Romans 15:5-6
5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,
6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Modern psychology/psychiatry has infiltrated Christianity very deeply and not particularly to the benefit of the faith. Fundamentally, modern psychology/psychiatry rests upon theories of human motivation and influence that remove God from the equation right from the start. Modern psychology/psychiatry assumes naturalism/materialism and this is reflected in how it approaches analyzing and addressing human psychological matters. As you can imagine, the Christian who adopts modern psychological systematics necessarily adopts its philosophical presuppositions and is guaranteed, then, to arrive at conclusions about the human mind and heart that are divergent, if not contrary, to Christian doctrine.
Here are some stark differences between modern psychology/psychiatry and God's truth about you and I:
Modern psychology/psychiatry focuses upon Self, seeking constantly to
understand it.
Christ calls his followers to
die to Self.
Matthew 16:24-25
John 12:24-25
Romans 6:1-11
Romans 8:13-14
Romans 12:1
Galatians 2:20
Galatians 5:24, etc.
Modern psychology/psychiatry seeks to remediate or improve, or "heal" Self.
God says Self cannot be improved but must, rather, be replaced with new life found in Jesus Christ.
Jeremiah 17:9
Romans 8:5-8
Matthew 15:19
Titus 3:3-8
2 Corinthians 5:17, etc.
Modern psychology/psychiatry denies sin.
God says our sin, and the separation from God it causes, is at the heart of our deepest psychological issues.
Isaiah 48:22
Romans 3:10-17
Galatians 6:7-8
Galatians 5:17
Galatians 5:19-21
Proverbs 11:2-8
Proverbs 12:21, etc.
Modern psychology/psychiatry merely manages psychological problems with drugs and "therapy."
God says full freedom from psychological problems can be found in Jesus, in submission to, and dependence upon, him.
Matthew 11:28-30
John 8:36
John 14:27
Philippians 3:16
Romans 8:6
Galatians 5:22-23
1 Corinthians 1:3
2 Corinthians 1:2, etc.
Modern psychology/psychiatry works to make a victim of the psychologically-afflicted, blaming upbringing, society, disease and accident for psychological struggles.
God says
we are responsible for our thoughts, feelings and actions and will give an account to Him one day for the content of these things.
Matthew 16:27
Romans 14:12
Hebrews 13:17
1 Peter 4:5
1 Corinthians 3:11-15, etc.
There are people affected by disease and injury or congenital defect who suffer with psychological symptoms from these things, but far and away the majority of people today on drugs for depression, anxiety and so on, relying on the therapist's couch for help, are not of this sort but folks who've been led to believe that they are victims, helpless before the "diseases" of unhappiness, despair, fear and psychoses that they have taken up, and only able to stumble along under a haze of medication, permanently bound to drugs and therapy, never actually made better. This is not the life God offers to us in Jesus.
