• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

hi

im healing from depression and abuse and all sorts of crap

im thinking of creating something to help myself when i feel overwhelmed/suicidal or just really down.

i thought it could be a shoe box and i could put things in it to cheer myself up. when i feel really low, i could go check out the box and hopefully it will cheer me up.

any ideas????

so far i thought:
  • a little bit of chocolate (solves everything ;)) LOL
  • some letters from friends
  • maybe some photos
  • some Bible verses written out
what else???

i need ideas please

aww... what a good idea.

I made a list for myself which I call "words of affirmation" and I read it when I'm down. Maybe you could make a list like this and put it in your box. I just typed up things people have said to me that have meant a lot to me. And parts of emails or letters that mean a lot to me. Things like "I care about you." and "You're a great girl and I like hanging out with you." this way I can remind myself of these things when i'm struggling.

I also have a list of Bible verses I keep in my Bible which are all about God's love for me, and a list of things that my counselor tells me are true but I don't quite believe. truths about myself like "I am a good daughter." "I am a good friend." "I am attractive."

yes, i like lists. maybe one or more of these might work for you.

Do you have any favorite aromas (i.e. lavendar oil, vanilla bean oil etc.) Something you can close your eyes and take in the hevenly scent.

Find a kaleidoscope with bright color schemes for visual stimulation. Colorful things really pick me up.

pictures of babies of all species (baby pup, baby kitten, babies and more babies. I'm a real softy when it comes to cuddly babies. They warm my heart.

Your favorite cartoon characters to take you back to childhood. I love Snoopy and Woodstock. They make me smile.

Pretty rocks you have found or polished rocks. Something that sparkles and glistens. These are all scensory stimuli that are pleasing to some people.

I have a list from a job I worked where all my co workers wrote something nice about me and I typed them all up on a list so i have it. It's good to look at sometimes they say things like ~You have a wonderful smile. ~ Your a wonderful person. ~You make the day so much brighter. It's just nice to have something to help bring your mood up when your down so I read that list sometimes.

- small stuffed animal
- wooden cross
- photographs of peaceful/ safe places
- small journal or blank book so you can write down whatever might be on your mind
- smooth stones... they feel good when you rub them
- scented oil, like rose wood or lily of the valley "anointing oil" (I just like to smell them because they are very comforting and remind me of Biblical stuff)
- small Bible with your favorite verses highlighed
- bottle of bubbles because they are not only fun to make, but very peaceful to watch float until they disappear
- a copy of your favorite CD or tape
