  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What do parents say to their 5 year olds (boy or girl) with all those Viagra commercials?

.

Dude~the viagra/cialis/that other one~~I used to spin the channel and mutter "stupid commercials" or cause some kind of distraction because I didn't want my 9 y/o asking "what's a prolonged erection?"...and he would:D

I don't like the BOB commercials where Bob is dressed as Santa with over sexualized females getting in line to sit on his lap. That commercial is practically pornography with all the sexual innuendos and what not. My kid is too young to understand but that's just wrong. Santa is a kids thing and they put the commercials in the middle of family programming.

Behold the gift of taping the show first and then fast-forwarding through all of the garbage.

Seriously though, commercials are psychologically wired to "convince" people, that is what they do best, and they should be avoided by everyone (but especially children).

I tell ya that's the way to do it, or if you're patient like me ya just have netflix send the season discs~I'm about halfway through season 3 of Deep Space 9..

Netflix is great!
At the very least mute the darn things... I'm saying those commercials will lead an undiscerning mind away from God quicker than some of the "worst" shows. I mean, at least when watching a secular program, you know to keep a heads up for ungodly ideas...

Yeah Netflix rules~I dropped one in the mail yesterday and got email saying next will be here tomorrow [local netflix point is only 50 miles away and our area~central PA~has the finest postal service in the country]~~I first had the Blockbuster mail thing but it took way too long to get dvd's, their closest point was down in freakin' Gaithersburg MD which is essentially a DC suburb..

My wife hits that mute button pretty quick when a commercial comes on~~we only get one station these day (NBC) since the digital changeover...

I was watching TV with my daughter when she was 7, one of those "male enhancment" commercials came on. I wasn't really paying attention or I would have turned/muted it, but my daughter was paying attention. She said "Daddy, you need to get that stuff, I want mommy to be really happy too!"

We cancelled our cable about 2 years ago and it was one of the best decisions we've ever made. Now WE choose what we watch - DVDs only. We have all been so desensitized to sin that we hardly even notice it any more, and once I had spent a few months without watching TV I started to realize that so profoundly! That's the whole point of the push to normalize sin in our society -- to make it okay.

Isaiah 30:10,11 talks about the 'rebellious people' who said to the prophets, "Do not prohesy to us right things; speak to us SMOOTH things, prohesy deceits. Get out of the way, turn aside from the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us."

That's what TV attempts to do - cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. To blind us to the sin and degradation around us and cause us to forget that we are living in Sodom. The Bible says that Lot was vexed daily because of the sin around him. That's why he was saved.

To anyone interested in trying it, I would challenge you to spend 6 months replacing TV time with Bible reading and tell us how your pereption of the world around you has changed. I'll tell you - when I did that, my whole perception of the world was capsized by the Word of God.

We're living in Sodom and we SHOULD be embarassed by the sin around us. Embarassed, grieved and VEXED.

I am a perfect example of one being desensitized to sin. I recently started attending church, reading my Bible... even owning a Bible, for that matter. It's amazing to see how desensitized to sin people can be, and once they realize it, it's not quite easy to become sensitive to it again, but I'm trying.

I haven't been reading the Bible for six months, but I decided to start reading nightly, and did see a huge change in the world. Or maybe it was just a change in myself. Either way, it was a good thing. I'd suggest trying the replacement of TV time as well.

I've always had a big problem with paying for TV. We used to watch a few so-called family shows, like but as the OP said, the commercials were just too much. When they quit broadcasting analog we declined to upgrade.

We've got a pretty good collection of DVDs and all the VHS tapes that nobody wants anymore. If something comes out we want to see, we rent it.

That's all we could ever want.
