Idiosyncrasies: She drinks huge amounts of water, much to the irritation of any friends/companions. People who know her swear that when she touches water she soaks it up.
Elsom's oldest memory is that of walking endlessly along the Lost Coast. In a village on the outskirts of the city Nuniya, an old couple took her in. The husband was a very devout and severe Christian, making a pilgrimage every full moon to the Ruins of Godia, and at times (for Elsom was a stubborn and starry-eyed child) taking it upon himself to "beat the devils" out of her.
When she was 14 years old (but 17 in appearance and mind), she stole a few loaves of bread that the wife had baked, and the fish that she had bought that day at the market, and ran away into the wilds. There a troupe of priestesses, going on some bloody and secret business, caught her unawares and enslaved her. Gradually she worked her way up to the position of Soreya, which is a priestess and head over ten initiates. Finally she settled in a small temple of Shardalon in a southern slum of Phelatia, among coarse folk, but near the sea.
The ranks of the priestesses of Shardalon are:
Soreya: head of ten initiates
Nassa: head of one temple's Soreyas
Mekel: head of a city or province
Raiben (pronounced rah-ih-ben): a council of thirteen (the cult's most holy number, besides six) elders, loosely overseers of the Mekels.
Shardal: high priestess under Shardalon, her voice on earth.
The tattooes of all the ranks are on their left earlobes, and are as follows:
