I'm probably not going to comment on any answers anyone gives to these questions below, because together these six questions form one open (unanswered) question in my mind:-
There are six questions listed below, based on the scriptures you see below:
Malachi 4
5 Behold, I am sending you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the sons, and the heart of the sons to their fathers, that I not come and strike the earth with utter destruction.
Question 1: In Luke 1:17, was Zechariah told that his son was Elijah who was to come?
And he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
Question 2: In John 1:21, when John the Baptist was asked by the Priests and Levites if he was Elijah, what did he say?
And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he says, I am not. Are you that prophet? And he answered, No.
The passage for the next three questions is quoted below Question 5:
Question 3: In Matthew 17:1-8, did the disciples see John the Baptist with Jesus and with Moses on the mountain when Jesus was transfigured?
Question 4: In Matthew 17:9-11, did Jesus say that John the Baptist truly shall come first and shall restore all things, or did He say Elijah shall come first and shall restore all things?
Question 5: In Matthew 17:12-13, was Jesus referring to John the Baptist, or was He referring to Elijah?
Matthew 17
1 And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain apart.
2 And He was transfigured before them. And His face shone as the sun, and His clothing was white as the light.
3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah talking with Him.
4 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You will, let us make here three tabernacles; one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.
5 While he yet spoke, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And behold a voice out of the cloud which said, This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased, hear Him.
6 And when the disciples heard, they fell on their face and were greatly terrified.
7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise and do not be terrified.
8 And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus alone.
9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, Tell the vision to no one until the Son of man has risen from the dead.
10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?
11 And answering Jesus said to them, Elijah truly shall come first and restore all things.
12 But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him, but have done to him whatever they desired. Likewise also the Son of man shall suffer from them.
13 Then His disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist.
Question 6: In Luke 1:17, when the angel was telling Zechariah about the son his wife was going to give birth to, was the angel's subject John the Baptist, or Elijah?
And he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
