I always think of 3 players in every story and the 3 represent a whole.Elija and Elisha's story are almost Identical. The way I see it that they went down when Elija was about to be taken up.And the flames split the 2 men apart taking away the flesh of Elija.Elija saw by faith alone but Elisha could see the spirit world like when he saw the army of G-d standing around his house in the air. I see their stories as the coming Messiah. Elija becomes Elisha and the first thing that happens is that he heals the waters and through the death of Elisha a dead man was resurected being that when that dead man was cast into Elisha's grave he became alive by touching his bones.Well their stories I believe are the most interesting but here is my question. How did those sons of the prophets know that Elija would be taking up on that day? there something there but I can't figure it out

You will notice that in 2 Kings chptr 2 that Elijah and Elisha went to Beth El and Jericho together in which they met with the prophets who served in these places. These prophets must have been told by G-d that Elijah's ministry was almost over. The prophets of Beth El knew:

2Ki 2:3 And the sons of the prophets in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, Do you know that today Jehovah will take your lord from your head? And he said, Yes, I know. Keep silent.

And the prophets of Jericho knew as well:

2Ki 2:5 And the sons of the prophets in Jericho came near to Elisha, and said to him, Do you know that today Jehovah will take away your lord from your head? And he said, Yes, I know. Keep silent.

As prophets they communed with G-d. The prophets of Jericho followed Elijah and Elisha to the water where they waited only to see Elisha return and empowered by the spirit that had previously rested on Elijah.

I don't know if this answered your question or not, but I've been studying the historical books of the bible for the last year. It's very intriguing.

Have a great day,
