I was the one wondering myself a few weeks back. Much chatter on that thread, but what I said above is the only answer that made any sense to me.

But I don't know about any archeological evidence. AFAIK, the Christian Easter has always been on a Sunday. Let's see what people know ou there!

The first Easter, the Resurrection of Christ, may indeed have been on a particular date in April. However, since then the calendar has undergone many revisions.

Also, Easter is related to Passover. The present-day calculations for Easter are based upon the Jewish calendar, which is dependant upon the lunar cycle.

Jews are commanded in Exodus to celebrate the Feast of the Passover every year. Through Christ's death and resurrection, we are "adopted" into the family of God's Chosen People, so it is fitting that our celebration coincide with the Passover, since Jesus is the Passover Lamb.
