i read the article regarding the preparation to this summit in "TIMES", looks like S.A is pouring a lot money into this, and everyone's cleaning up the place and trying to get the crime rate down. :) (which's good!)

coming to the summit? wish i was important enough, lol, but i'm sure everyone is watching it closely, especially for those who work in science (used to study enviro science, but quitted). Hope something will come out of this.... we keep saying we need to do this and that, but the economy and the money keep complicating the issue.

Yep - SA is pouring a lot of money into the event. But what is good is that the focus is on sustainability and not just on the event. A lot of what are called Legacy Projects have been strated and will be around looking at communities and other not purely environmental issues.
What always concerns me as a Christian when the environment or environmental issues come to the fore - is they are often accompanyed by new agers and earth children (pagans) and these are often seen as a single issue.

New agers dominate because Christians have opted out. The attitude amongst some christians I have talked to about this issue is 'well God's going to blow the earth anyway, so why worry', which is pretty shelfish since environmental issues have a big impact on other people, as we are beginning to see with climate changes (floods, droughts, erosion). Even though I am on a very strict budget I try to support companies that are environmentally friendly, such as the Body Shop, Fair-trade shops etc.

Yes that's what I meant when I said that these environmental issues so often get mixed up and seen as a New Age / Pagan type affair with the spiritualism aspect and "Mother Earth" getting linked to anything environmental.

I don't think one can say that this is a purely South African phenomenon. When we look at any environmental gathering they tend to have these type of dancers, getting in touch with nature etc. around.

Susan,

I respect your point of view, but environmentalism is not evil.

Take John Muir for example (my favorite naturalist). He was a very devout Christian and was elated with any opportunity to enjoy one of God's most beautiful crations... nature.

It is important to treat all creation with reverence. Personally, I feel extremely close to God when I'm hiking or camping or even just fly fishing ecause I am free of the distractions of the world around me and can focus on just being in God's presence.

Nature is ours to use and protect .

It would be pretty irresponsible of us to destroy what Gos has given us.

If we take it upon ourselves to live in a more environmentally sustainable manner, how much richer will we be having kept pure the great natural treasures that God has given the earth.

You should read up on John Muir, then tell me that environmentalism is unchristian.

just a question Susan, no offence here. How could the cleaning of the earth, meaning that we'll have fresher air (with all the goodies) be evil? It'll benefit everyone!

to protect the environment is a worthy course, just as preventing a nuclear war, famine and drought. What we're doing is just trying to make the best situation out of a mess, isn't that what we Christians have been doing all along with God's strength?

to Tini and altya,

you guys are so right, isn't nature called "mother nature"? and that hints at you know what.

Just an update on the Earth Sumit.

Thanks for a input into the thread guys. Yes I agree with Blessed one and coastie. I feel that we as Christians should protect the environment. I guess I'm in the right job ;)

Things are pretty political in the main summit. But there are a lot of very useful dialogues and side events going on putting real people in contact with each other to address problems.

It was great to see the following ministry team at the main Ubuntu Village.

http:\\www.thefamily.org - perhaps pay them a visit

Blessings to all

The problem I have with what the earth summit represents. It has nothing to do with Christianity. It’s all about pantheism, the worship of mother earth. JESUS will not be worshipped at this event. There will be no prayers for the kingdom of CHRIST to come. It will only entail of what man can do to save himself. The Christians that are supporting this event may be doing it because they fill it is a good cause, but what they are actually doing is supporting a UN sponsored event that only wants unity for the purpose of a world government. A world government ruled by man is only enslavement of mankind. The books of Daniel and Revelation warn of this event and the evil it represents. So Christians please do not be deceived by the supposed good intentions of what the earth summit is trying to portray. It real goals are the unity of the worship of mother earth and then a world government. Under the UN’S world constitution written by the united parliamentary association, private ownership of land will not be allowed along with firearms, and there are many other stipulations that will clearly violate the US constitutional rights of US citizens. We as Christians should refrain from supporting any activity that is sponsored by the UN. The UN will be the catalyst for the world government that brings the anti-christ to power.

I personally see nothing wrong with conservation of the environment, and yes if the technology exist to help keep the environment unpolluted, I will be the first one to say use it. I am against groups or organization that used these issues as a platform for taking control of the world lands and resources to distribute as they see fit. As we can see happening with our US parks services being systematically taken over by the UN in agreements our government has signed with them. Peace, but not yet.

Marantha, I had just a good laugh.
THe Earth summit has a clearly defined goal, to REDUCE THE POLLUTION ON EARTH. Which other issues you have wit the UN, that´s up to you. But stretching the reduction of pollution to forbidding firearms is really a far stretch.
Or perhaps you are desperately afraid of international traties that are binding to everyone. Sort of globalisation of countries. I hate to wake you up from your self induced little fantasy world, but the workings nowadays are global. Companies have spread around the world and countries need to keep up with it.
The technology to reduce pollution exists. It just costs money and need further research to make it cheaper. Burt the oil industry wails and the sheep follow its lead.
