  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If you haven't discovered this already, it's definitely worth looking into - it's free, (with donations accepted), downloadable Bible Study software...here's a link to the home page -

e-Sword - the Sword of the LORD with an electronic edge

Personally like the King James in correlation with the Strong's Concordance w/ Hebrew & Greek Dictionaries.

There is also much more available - other translations, Bible dictionaries, etc.

May The Good Lord Be Pleased to Bless !

Absolutely a Powerful alternative to Bible Study software. Is what I use everyday. I installed over 30 bibles all free except for a couple I bought, over 20 dictionaries all free, over 25 commentaries all free, countless topic books all free!

I also have Logos, I dropped over $300 in to that system years ago and all I have is 6 bibles, 2 dictionaries, 2 commentaries. Sure it's nice, but I would have to spend another $1200 to match what I have on e-sword!

I love it!

almost forgot, great support, community and they add new modules every day over at http://biblesupport.com

Which frontend would that be?

Could you also keep in mind that there isn't a version of esword on Linux which is what I use and after a quick look at some esword screenshots I think that my preferred frontend (Xiphos) is far more polished and less cluttered

http://xiphos.org/

After a look at the windows front end I agree, just as messy as esword, however xiphos has a port to windows,

I'm not sure if you were talking to me or not, progmonk, but if so, MacSword and PocketSword* seems based on The Sword Project.

PocketSword: an iPhone Bible Study app

However, my GUI isn't cluttered in the least as I've hidden and rearranged some of the modules. Honestly, when I installed it on my sister's computer for her, I was struck with its cluttered interface in comparison to the very intuitive and basic layout I was used to.

* The primary Bible software I use on my iPod is Blueletter Bible.

Isn't GnomeSword Linux's port of E-Sword? Or was GnomeSword superseded by Xiphos? I know there are two Bible programs for Linux, but I cannot remember the name of the second.

I use it and I think it is great. The only thing do not like is the word processor used. I wish there was some way to put Microsoft Word into the software. I keep finding myself copying text out of Esword into Word so I can do more with the text.

I was talking to The True Carpenter, sorry for the mix up :p

GnomeSword was indeed superseded by Xiphos, the other program on Linux is BibleTime, both are based off of the Sword Project.

Another reason to use e-sword is the support is phenomenal and by far has the most number of modules and third party support. Also you can purchase premium modules that are under strict copyright.

Many of the modules available for theWord would not be available if they were not converted from the e-sword library! So unless you know how and don't mind taking the time to convert modules, e-sword is simply hands down the best when you consider the ease of use and extensive ready to library ready for download :)

Like I said, I have Logos which is The Best Premium Bible Study software out there, yet I use e-sword mostly! Why? As I pointed out earlier, my $300+ bundle from Logos only consists of about 8 Bibles, 3 dictionaries and 3 commentaries! On e-sword I have over 25 bibles, over 25 dictionaries, over 25 commentaries, countless books! I would have to spend over a thousand dollars on Logos to match that line up!

I will admit if theWord had this kind of support and ready made selection, I would be using theWord, but sadly they don't.

Just switched over to The Word, all I can say is, WOW!

It was worth all the time porting over all my books and bibles, I have most of them over on the Word now.

This is the most configurative feature packed program I have ever seen! You can completely configure this program to look and behave any way you want!

Very powerful too! Sorry guys, smokes e-sword :)

I've tried it before and I do admits it's a great program. Both have their strong points. Every module I've created has been through e-Sword, but is also converted to The Word. Free Bible study programs have come a long way over the last couple of years.

I've never tried Logos before, I noticed it could be very pricey even with stuff in the Public Domain.
