  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Drunkenness & Gluttony

Much as binge drinking has of recent days been reckoned socially acceptable on college campuses, the Bible says, "Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks." Isaiah 5:22 "Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise." Prov 20:1

Drunkenness and Gluttony, being sins of overindulgence are related having similar outcomes. Pr 23:20,21 "Do not mix with winebibbers, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags."

Gluttony and drunkenness go hand in hand along with other sorts of over-indulgence. It says in Eph 5:18 "do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation." "Dissipation" means wastefulness. In fact today getting drunk is spoken of as "getting wasted". But along with drunkenness there are other ways people are involved in wasting their lives and their possessions.

And there were severe penalties under the law for drunkenness and gluttony. "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city. And they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear." Deut 21:18-21
