  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Romans 13:13-14 said:
Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

1 Corinthians 5:11 said:
But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 said:
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Ephesians 5:18 said:
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Galations 5:19-21 said:
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Basically, drunkeness is bad....*very* bad.

Of course, people can drink one or two and not get drunk...it depends on the person and the strength of the drink. So an occasional glass of beer or an occasional glass of wine isn't going to hurt...so long as you are controlled and don't let one lead to another...and another....and another. You get my drift ;)

The Bible says many things that can be applied to drinking.

It clearly says that drunkeness is wrong. That is pretty self-explanatory.

It also says that we need to be careful not to cause other people to stumble. That can be applied to drinking in a situation where there is a person with an alcohol problem present. It would be better to help them to stay strong by refraining from alcohol yourself in that kind of situation.

The Bible also tells us that if we aren't sure about something, it's better to choose not to do it. If we have doubts as to whether or not it's ok to be drinking alcohol, then we should choose not to. If someone believes that drinking alcohol is a sin, then they shouldn't drink it. If we combine the concept in the previous paragraph with this one, it would also make sense to refrain from drinking if you are in the presence of someone who is a new Christian and is unsure about whether it is ok.

Also, the Bible tells us to obey authorities. Therefore, if it is illegal for someone to drink, say because of age, they shouldn't drink.

Finally, there's such a thing as common sense. For example, don't drink and drive. Clearly it would be pretty stupid to have a drink and then get behind the wheel of a car. Science has shown that even a single drink slows reaction time and impairs judgment, even though the blood alcohol level may still be well below the legal limit.

It's not like the persons of the bible were the only ones in history with common sense.

"Do not get drunk, because it leads to debauchery" - exactly what most parents would tell their kids today. It's good advice, even if it's not really true - being drunk doesn't necessarily mean you'll do something stupid. But it may, and nobody has died from being sober. It's a good thing to use common sense, even if you're a christian. You also have the benefit of the Spirit, who is to teach us all things (and that in itself should exclude the necessity of questions like these).

Enjoy life, have a drink if you want to. Or five. Live and learn. God isn't supervising your life, checking points on a "sin list." He's there with you whether you're drunk or sober, whether you're screwing up or not. Not everybody should own a car, not everybody should drink, not everybody should become a missionary, and so on.

There is nothing wrong with having a drink every single day, in my opinion. I agree with what Holo, Fishstix and Starelda wrote. My mother-in-law and father-in-law usually have a nightly glass of wine of scotch. They are completely moral and God-fearing and they are Christians who attend church every week. My mom, however, doesn't drink, ever. She also is a wonderful Christian woman. I almost never drink because I like chocolate better. :)
