  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I can't seem to get his radio program on the air anymore, but I loved it when I could get it.

I can't say that I've agreed with every statement he's ever made, but who does?

I would love to have a phone line directly to his office so that I can call and ask for his advice throughout the day.

We've also read a lot of his books and listen to him from time to time on the radio. 'm busy with Bringing up Boys at the moment. Very thought provoking and a good insight into society today I find.

Along with some of the other threads - we also use a lot of the "Dare to discipline" advice in disciplining our sons.

Cheers and God Bless

We're off to a church conference in Bloemfontein this coming week. Cant wait!

I've taken more of Dr. Dobson's advice regarding parenting than probably any other. My mother before me raised my sister and I on the same advice, so I have to guess it works!!

One thing I have notived is that his opinions and advice do seem to change occasionally according to what society leads. Like he used to be a great big advocate of spanking ,(I suppose he still is) but when this issue came up in the news in recent years, some of his opinions changed, he tempers his message now with a little caution.

I understand why and how this happens of course, as society changes, what is regarded as appropriate behaviour in children changes too. New issues come up and take over, like gays in schools, and school violence, and ADHD/ADD, so the way we raise and teach our kids changes too.

I suppose the best thing I like about his ministry is they have chosen some of the basic morality and made a life-ling stand about them. (like homosexuality, TV violence, abortion). In a society where media calls the shots, they are still fighting not to give these issues over to the dogs!!

Used to dislike what he was doing, but now I respect him. A few years ago, FOTF went through a rough time; the moderator of the radio show confessed to an affair, and the director of their homosexual ministry was caught drinking in a gay bar. I thought Dobson handled both truly the way Christ would have. He earned my respect by his actions in these two difficult situations.

Does anyone have comments about Dr Jame Dobson and the Focus on the Family ministry?

we find a lot of his advice, although a little conservative, very useful.
I've never been particularly comfortable with much of his advice. He takes a confrontational approach to parenting, defining issues in terms of a struggle for control between parent and child. I've found that such control struggles are more often an artifact of the parent's expectations; and that a collaborative expectation that the child and parent will be on the same side of most issues, with the parent acting as coach and mentor to the child, results in a happier, more peaceful parent-child relationship.

I suppose I might find his advice more applicable if my family conformed a little more closely to the post-WW-II family norms that seem to be his milieu. That's so different, though, from our family life that sometimes it's hard to recognize anything like our situation in his writings.

I know a great many Christians do rely on his advice. If it suits their situation, and if they don't let it lead to exacerbating discord between parent and child, then it's as good a source of parenting advice as any.

I have one daughter, now 19, who is a strong Christian and a good kid, good student, etc. We went through early teen power struggles, had to be nosey and weed out a negative influence here and there, and James Dobson's advice about picking your battles and riding out the rough seas to just "get them through it" helped me immensely. We tried to make sure that for every ounce of punishment, there was a pound of love and encouragement.

I have listen to him numerous times and some of the stuff he has said is true and helpful but for the most part I am not to into him. his boycotting everything out there attitude that he seems to have kinda bothers me but that is jsut my personal opion Other than that if he helps others then great but for the most part I don't care all that much for him but as for FOTF soem of the speakers they have on there are great.

Dr. Dobson, i used to listen to him alot in the past, but i hardly do anymore, but i think he knows what he is talking about, and he cares for people out there, Even tho. he protest on things, somethings i agree with him on, and others i don't. He knows what he is doing, he's been around for a long time. I like to listen to Odyssey.

I grew up with Dr. Dobson's books. Like any other person, you have to take the advice and use what works for you and your family. I highly admire him. Years ago in college I took a one semester study program through Focus on the Family. I was able to meet Dr. Dobson and his wife and get to know them more. It's a wonderful ministry.

For the lady who said she can't get the program on the radio anymore. Go to their website. and you can see a box that says Today's broadcast and in little letters Recent Broadcasts and if you click on them, you can actually go to a link that lets you listen to them on your computer. I am not allowed to post a link yet so I don't know. But it is family.org
