I think it depends on intent.

Music is a service. Am I right to demand a car service for free simply because the "product" for the most part isn't touchable? It's no different to music. It takes someones time and money to invest in. Making use of that without payment and/or without permission is wrong.

I have no problem with folks who download a song here and there to see if they like the song/artist. I think share programs are great for this. If anything it only increases CD sales. I do this myself on occasion. I have no intention of spending $20 on an artist that has been recommended to me if I don't know I'll like them. I have spent $20 on a recommended artist after downloading a song or two and discovering they are that good.

People who get all their music from p2p networks however I do have a problem with. They can dodge the issue all they want but IMHO it is stealing. I've heard the claim that "CD's are a too expensive" too many times. I don't understand why this justifies stealing. If something is too expensive then you simply do without. If enough people agree, the price will come down. The power of the consumer is enormous as a whole, we simply choose not to use it most of the time.

I was about to say basically the same thing as Marissa last night before my PC decided to go wacko! I only download samples from an artist's official site or an online music store that enables me to assess the quality of that artist's album before I spend money on it.

Even if you own the original track, downloading a copyrighted song is still illegal. Whether God reallys takes much notice of it though, I couldn't say.

*Edit: Spelling*

No it's not actually. The legality of the issue is in regard to copyright. If you own the track on the CD, then you have a licence to have that music.

why is there a debate about this? it's illegal to download music that you aren't paying for, unless the artist is giving it away for free. i mean, regardless of legal matters, as Christians, shouldn't it irk us to take something from someone without paying them for it? We should be the FIRST people to stand up and say "this is wrong."

Yes, why can't people see this?

(Most) People don't want to stand up and say it's wrong because they do it themselves. Technically, it's wrong. I would probably still be doing it, except for the fact that I don't want to be sued, lol. Yes, you can call me paranoid, I'm afraid that I will be picked out of millions of other users and fined. Hey, it has to be someone, right?

Unless you live in Canada, where legality isn't an issue for file-sharing anymore.
A judge has ruled it legal to share music and download it too.

Is it legal? Depends on where you live.
Is it right? That's open to interpretation.

Downloading music is not stealing.
Technically, it's copyright infringement.

Copyright infringement is a fairly new concept. It's a legal term, not a moral term.
Downloading music is taking something that would not usually be yours without payment. How is that not stealing? (regardless of the legal classification of copyright infringement).

yeah, it's an interesting thing, cos most artists don't really care too much about file sharing... they make so little money out of the record sales that it doesn't really affect them (all the stupid middle people make all the money. they should be the ones living off the scraps :p )
all this digital rights management and stuff seems to be about control rather than protection of the artists' work.
this situation all comes about becuase we treat music as a comodity rather than an art form (which is what it should be)
if i didnt have programmes like soulseek, i would never have heard the music of such weird and wonderful artists like jandek / the shaggs / corn mo... there's no where you can buy that stuff here, as far as i'm aware...
to me it's the same kind of deal as copieing my sister's "eight" demo cd, cos they're out of print. the only way i could get a copy is to burn a cd myself. no one's loosing out, so i don't see the problem at all..
