Downloading games!

What do you guys think about downloading games off torrents and such for free?

Do you think it is a sin to try them out and if you like it, go out and buy the game?

I do it, but my compromise is that I have bought so many bad games and never got my money back that it is ok to download some and play them.

I don't know about a sin, but it would probably qualify as such because it is theft. Used to be that you could rent a game and decide if you liked it before you buy it. Oh, wait! You can still do that and it is easier than ever. That's the legal, honest and moral way of going about it, because those rentals are licensed for that very purpose.

Except you can't rent games on the only good system. The pc. You can do trials but half the crap or in most cases 90% of the gameplay is taken away. IE WoW. Nevertheless. It isn't stealing, once again it's against the law but not stealing. No more stealing than if a friend handed you a copy you didn't pay for.

If your friend gives you his copy, then no. If a friend gives you a copy or is still playing the game while you have his copy, then it is a form of stealing.

The reason why there are probably no PC game rentals is because there is no way to guarantee that you won't copy the game before you send it back. At least with consols, it is harder to play a copied game.

Not really. A copy of software is licensed to one person or one computer. It's the same as going to a buffet and buying one dinner for one person and letting another person use your buffet while you are in the bathroom. You aren't using it at that moment and you paid for it, so it should be fine, right?

So as said, renting is out of the question. I would hate to pay for a game that sucks and be out 60 bucks. No matter how crappy the game is they still justify the 60 bucks.

Considering the amount of manpower, time and energy they use to create the games, I think $60 is probably a pretty fair price for a brand new game. You could do what I do and wait a few weeks or even months to get a new game and pay $20 for the same game...

So, you don't want sites to be blocked which are engaging in illegal activity, would you prefer that game makers go out of business and stop making games completely? If they don't get enough people buying their games because it is so much easier to just steal them, it will happen.

Because some games just aren't worth it. Legally they can charge whatever they want and that doesn't matter. I am just saying if the game sucks don't expect people to buy it. If it sucks enough it gets deleted from my HD and I won't buy it. I have 2 games I torrented that I bought. Fallout new vegas and Skyrim. I wanted to test them out, I didn't want to play oblivion with guns (fallout 3) so I tried out NV. I liked it. I bought it. Same with skyrim. I didn't want to play oblivion again because I hated that game. This one turned out good and I bought it.

So, you don't want sites to be blocked which are engaging in illegal activity, would you prefer that game makers go out of business and stop making games completely? If they don't get enough people buying their games because it is so much easier to just steal them, it will happen.

Problem is, it won't be sites that are engaging in the illegal activity. The vid explained that. Don't just go against it because I hold an opposing view. Think for a second and look at what that really means. You think they are just going to ignore sites like this? No. Hell no. This site and many others will be brought down and if you don't believe they won't stoop to that low watch this.

Most people wouldn't go to the trouble to copy hardware. Not sure what you meant by this?

Think for a second and look at what that really means.

I've thought about it and in general I don't agree with the government intervention approach and I don't really in this case either. I just recognize the desperation in their approach. Attempts to create unbreakable encryption to prevent copying are shot down with less time invested than it took to create the encryption. CDs that degrade and become unusable were shot down as well. I think you are seeing a group of people who are out of ideas.

Have you ever thought about how it would feel to spend your time, money and energy to create something only to watch people rip it off, leaving you with no reward for your investment?

Yeah it sucks but like I said, I PAY for them. So me testing out what could be a crappy game before i buy it is just playing it safe. I won't buy a crappy game. I have tested a few. I deleted fallout 3, oblivion, a few others who were too crappy to take note of and bought the ones I liked.

So really once it's all said in done I have stolen nothing.

Did they ever? Go straight to the companies. Issue is, you may have to be willing to not buy a game that you really want to make your point, along with several thousand other people to get the change.

See now we are back to the digital media. I give my friend a cd. That is not stealing. Even if I copied the songs to my computer. If I gave you my car then it would be no issue. I believe if you give the CD to someone while keeping a digital copy for yourself, you are actually violating the licensing for the CD.

Me too. However, the point being that distributing copies of something is governed by licensing rights. Just as you are the only one who can decide who gets to borrow your car, a company has the same rights to decide who gets to distribute their games. Getting a copy from somewhere that doesn't have those rights, is illegal because you are denying them that right, even if you are just "evaluating" their product.

Perhaps you could become involved in beta testing for these companies. Who knows, perhaps you could even get paid for it.

On an individual level, no, the company wouldn't suffer from someone playtesting the game, keeping it to themselves, and then deleting it after purchase or a decision they didn't like it.

The problem is, the bulk of those trading in cracked games aren't going to be behaving the same way. So in the sense of the providing traffic (however small) for a service that when taken as a whole damages those providing the content, then yes, it is a problem.

I know though that PC gamers have it tougher in this instance - I would have thought the best way to market a PC game is via time-limited trial versions though those can probably be cracked too. Give the company more control over the temporary release of their product, not the consumer.

You can always check the online reviews of a game before purchasing it. It's not necessary to blindly buy a game without knowing how good it is. Gamespot and Ign (among other sites) will generally have in depth reviews for every major new release.

I don't support game piracy because, in general, people don't purchase a game they've illegally downloaded. When sales decrease, less titles are produced, and that's bad for everyone. Game companies are also more likely to include "anti customer" measures such as DRM when there's piracy.
