As some of you may know, we spend the first 2 weeks of August remembering the Theotokos. This is done by fasting, prayer and Paraklesis services. We honor and thank her obedience and hold her up as an icon of what we can be if Christ is in us as He was in her.

In honor of the Theotokos I will not be posting in the Mariology forum during the fast. I hope to use the fast to renew myself once again. I pray that through her example, Mary will lead me to dedicate myself and my whole life to Christ our God.

I'm posting this a day ahead of time in case anyone is interested in a meaningful, respectful exchanged on the subject before the fast begins.

Peace.:crosseo:

Wonderful idea. I'd love to limit my overall internet time, if I can manage it, during this time.

Fast is over. Time to feast.

After confession this past week, I realized something. I really don't like "feeling" like a servant. I like to serve others, but on my own terms, as soon as someone gets bossy or needy or unappreciative, then I get resentful.

My favorite verse from the Small Paraklesis:
You are a tower adorned with gold,
A city surrounded by twelve walls,
A shining throne touched by the sun,
A royal seat for the King,
O unexplainable wonder,
How do you nurse the Master?

Hey, that sounds like me. I fall short in this area, among many others.

LOL, I didn't even realize the thread was a year old when I started reading it. It's a wonderful thread though, and I always read these types of threads with more than a little chagrin. One of these days I'm going to figure out the Orthodox fasting cycles and participate with you. It's an area where frankly, you guys rock.

Kristos, it is even harder to have to be the one that others serve. I had that happen to me at one point in my life, and it was extremely humbling and very hard to get used to.

There are some wonderful fasting cookbooks out there. Two of the ones that I have and really enjoy are: When You Fast: Recipes for Lenten Seasons by Catherine Mandell (SVS Press) and A Lenten Cookbook for Orthodox Christians by St. Nectarios Orthodox Church (St. Nectarios Press). I am sure both of these can be obtained from Light & Life Publishing - World's Largest Orthodox Supplier or amazon.com

We also combine the fasting with increased time in prayer, spiritual reading, almsgiving (which include giving our money and/or time to others, encouraging others, praying for them). We also try really hard not to take things in that harm us and to fast with our tongues, eyes, and ears as well as the food.

Well, I guess if nobody's going to volunteer to just cook for me.....;)

Thanks!

Thanks!

Now, who's going to teach me how to cook in a manner that I don't starve? Because this will take some thought.
In 99.9% of all Orthodox internet forums there will be some thing about fast season cooking recipes.

In fact if I were a betting man I would say there is one in TAW. In fact, I will guarantee that there is a thread with Lent friendly recipes!
