  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't think you need to watch it twice, but everytime I watch it, I get a different meaning of the movie than I did before.... a Director's Cut just came out which is supposed to clear up some of the vagueness, but I am not sure I will like that.

see also: everything by david lynch - twin peaks, blue velvet, lost highway, maholland (sp?) drive, even DUNE- speaking of dune- alexandro jodorowsky was going to do that film, with salvador dali cast as the emperor. alexandro jodorowsky makes some really crazy movies. see- holy mountain, el topo, etc

also- waking life.

these are the other films I think of when people tell me they like donnie darko (which I think is awesome, naturally... yes, I'm an alt film fanboy :D )

One of my favorites! And I know exactly how you felt creep. I just couldn't get the movie out of my head for several days...it was kind of surreal. The thing is, I don't care much for David Lynch movies...I think those tend to go off the deep end a bit more than DD. DD had just the right amount of dark humor, sarcasm, mystery, and bizzareness. It was deep enough to keep me thinking about it for a few weeks and trying to figure out all the meaning...but not so deep that I couldn't figure a dang thing out by myself. I can't wait until the director's cut comes out on DVD...I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

I thought that Donnie Darko was an incredible film. It completely messed with my head but I like movies that make me think! The Director's Cut is definitely worth a look - there's a lot more about time travel with extracts from Roberta Sparrow's book which helps to explain what's going on. I only understood what was really going on with the two universes after I got the Director's Cut. Also the extras are really interesting and the commentary was so helpful.

One question for fans - Just to check I got this right... does the tangent universe start the night Donnie meets Frank and end after Gretchen has died? :confused:

My understanding is that the tangent universe begins the moment the jet engine appears...it doesn't technically end because of what donnie does at the end. otherwise, the tangent universe would've collapsed and the world would've ended.

+++ POSSIBLE SPOILERS +++
the tangent universe would have had to start shortly before the jet engine appears because Frank is in the tangent universe and he leads donnie out of his room before the engine scrashes through his room
Ah yes...that's right. The appearance of an artifact (jet engine) only signifies that there now exists a tangent universe...but it does not necessarily begin with it's appearance. I do remember on the DVD commentary now it being stated that the tangent universe begins when Donnie is woken by Frank.

I saw it once and though I thought it was interesting and well done, I also thought it was pseudo-intellectual in a 2001 kind of way. It kept going back from psychosis to wormholes to mystery to social commentary as if there was some kind of deep underlying symmetry or meaning. I didn't see it. Then again, I only saw it once and I've heard you have to see it more than once to really get it.

yeah that's right, because pretty much most of the film is actually in the tangent universe and not the real world... at the end when Donnie is sitting on the car and you see the jet engine falling, it disappears into the cloud which I assume is supposed to be the portal? Then the tangent universe ends and back in the real universe the jet engine appears and Donnie dies. I think.
Tis a mindbender all right!
Eternal Sunshine i also loved... what a wonderful film. I also liked Jim Carrey for the first time!
