• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Maybe i should have been a little more specific. When things come from my ocd i am supposed to not listen to the ocd and im supposed to not believe my ocd. But a lot of the times its very hard to do the right thing. I just get very afraid because i will get thoughts and feelings that im sinning when i do things that are not sinful. I will get it into my mind that i have done something or that for some reason that has made non-sinful things sinful for me to do. I have been told to ignore my ocd when it tells me that I'm sinning in these cases but it is very hard for me to.

Can any of you please offer me some help.

Hey there,

the way I see it: there are no "religious sins", and therefor you cant be sinning and you don't need to fear God being angry.

if you know what the right thing to do is, then do it. Don't worry about you "sinning against God",
do what you think is right, not the thing that you'd think God would like.

just wondering, could you give me some examples of these dilemma's you're facing?

All I can say is that I know what you're talking about drummingman. I'm struggling with this very issue right now myself. At this time, I virtually have no ability to ignore my ocd. I'm just starting to recognize it. Since I was a child I've been plagued with believing everything I do is somehow sinful. So, I really have no advice. Just support I guess.

When it comes to coping with my ocd 99% of the time im sure of what to do, its just real hard for me to do it a lot of the times. What is all of your advice that will help me to be able to do the right things?

the right think is doing what works for you that doesnt cause harm the key is to do the best you can

HI Drummingman,
It's just totally awesome that you recognize and can seperate your rational logical mind at work from the instinctive fear response of your OCD.
That's a huge leap in the right direction and you need to keep up the good work.
As to it being "real hard" to ignore the OCD prompting you to engage in the compulsions - yes - it's unbelievably hard. That's because you cannot control the instinctive fear response in your brain that is causing you to feel that to not do the compulsions is both dire and dangerous.
But the old saying "practice makes perfect" is very applicable to managing OCD compulsions. When the fear response drives you into performing the compulsions, whether purely mental or outward activities just remind yourself that you are feeding the disorder. Don't get mad at yourself for these lapses but keep on working toward allowing the discomfort that ensues from not engaging in the compulsion to just be there.
It's a long and ardous journey we walk in learning to manage our OCD but the important thing is to just keep pressing on in our efforts. Some days we'll do a great job and on other days we won't but not giving up is the key.
Keep up the good work.
God Bless and I'm praying for you - as always.
