dog affectionate or maternal?

My darling angel 3yr old toy poodle licks my husband's face (and ears) for 30 minutes to an hour almost every night when he goes to bed. It seems very affectionate and motherly, but I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge or thoughts as to why she might do this? At first I thought maybe the dog needed to go outside, or wanted her tummy rubbed, but that's not it. Any ideas anyone?

My fiancee has an incredibly cute miniature Beagle who loves to lick my face. I let the dog do it because the dog is just so darned cute. I have no idea what the reasoning is, I just had a similar situation...
