I ask because as an old man in need of work and stupid enough as a youth to believe God would be gracious enough to allow me a lady in my life; it seems to me the only way it works is if I only allow NO! for God answers, so much for my joy, John 16:23-24.
Right now my prayers are very abase and full of foul language as I see God as hating me so can’t figure how I can love Him, I John 4:19.

Have you considered being a man in some lucky ladies life? Are you up for that?
If you don't think you are the-catch-of-the-day, decide why that is.

God operates entirely on principle. He is not swayed by emotion, can't be bullied, blackmailed or coerced into doing things man's way. Keep that in mind and you may get some help.

Some suggestions:

1. Never get mad at God. It is a recipe for disaster.
2. Unforgiveness, especially towards another Christian. It cuts off God's blessing.
3. Hidden sin. "If I hide iniquity in my heart, He will not hear me"
3. Complaining. Check out how that worked for Israel in the desert.
4. Pride. Precedes a fall. God resists the proud.
5. Unbelief. "Those who come to God must believe that He exists and the rewarder of those who earnestly seek Him"
6. Impatience. Leads to tribulation because tribulation produces patience
7. Focus on self. Asking for the wrong motives

It's much better to come to God really, really humble. With thanksgiving, not complaining. Confess your sin. "I believe, help me overcome my unbelief" works fine. Tell God you do not understand. Ask Him to show you anything that might hinder your prayers. Very often that is all God needs.

How do I know all this? 49 years of often painful experience. You will find it all in God's word as well.

Prayer is making requests to God.
"Be not anxious for anything, but by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God; and the peace of God that passes all understanding will keep your hearts and mind in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7).

Prayer is not a force in itself to make God to do anything that we want Him to do. Using prayer that way is witchcraft, the same that third-world witch-doctors do.

In actual fact, God knows what we have need of before we even ask Him.

God is not your servant to be a push-button vending machine to supply all your wants on demand. The Scripture says that we need to submit ourselves under the mighty hand of God. He resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. We need to surrender to God and to allow Him to develop us into the persons He wants us to be.

I agree with the others on this thread and yes prayer does work. I have experienced much answered prayer.

My brother was saved just before he died and unbeknownst to me he started attending church over the months I was praying more for him.

I also asked for people to pray for my other brother on here and have posted on here the screenshot of when I asked and then him messaging me a day or two later about his spiritual condition.

Another time I was miraculously healed. I had a mouth infection and over the course of the day it was getting worse. I had the same infection a few times over the years due to a flap of gum because of a wisdom tooth that couldn't come through. I knew I could go to the dentist the next day and get antibiotics. I also knew it would be a lot worse by then. I humbly prayed to God for healing. I earnestly said to him that 'Please Father, I want to give you the glory for healing me and not the dentist' because I did and my heart yearned to do that, to be qble to rely on Him instead of a medicine. As soon as I stopped praying the pain subsided and the swelling started to go down. It was completely healed by morning. Praise Him.

One time we were stuck in heavy rain at a play park under a shelter. My daughter who was probably 9 at the time wanted to ask God to stop the rain. I didn't want to discourage her so agreed. We all prayed together and after we said amen the heavy rain suddenly slowed and stopped! I was so pleased that her prayer and faith was rewarded. I thought it wouldn't stop for at least 20 minutes.

One time shocked my oldest who isn't a Christian but acknowledges God's existance. We were at another park and some teenage girls threw a plastic bottle onto a large duck pond. I went across to the side of it a bit further down. The wind was blowing it parallel to the edge (about two meters out) and i doubted it would come my way. I prayed 'Please Lord let me set an example and get this bottle so I can put it in the bin near to where the girls are standing' the wind changed and the bottle came right up to my feet. He was shocked and exclaimed 'Ha, did you pray then' I just smiled and nodded. I non-judgementally put the bottle in the bin remembering that I'm not perfect either so I need to act nicely towards those girls especially as God had kindly helped me to get the bottle.

There have been many more instances of prayer which have been answered by God. It's through His benevolence and goodness rather something I do. It's not of me. I rather think He delights in answering prayer that will teach me something and to act in the way He wants. I know that it fills me in awe of Him and humbles me. To God be the Glory.

I think the most important thing is to ask in faith with honesty, recognising His sovereignity and greatness.

If you think you have no faith, ask for faith. Just going to Him honestly in prayer shows some level of faith. Jesus always recognised faith and said even with a little faith the size of a mustard seed God can do great things. He is gracious enough to give you that faith and teach you His ways.

A song has just entered my head based on Matthew 6 or 7. I'll find the song and the verses.

Edit:
Its Matthew 6:33 and Matthew 7:7-12

Oops just seen what forum this is in and now understand what you meant a lot better. I thought you were seeking God. Sorry. Maybe you had it right in your youth. Uck remember the love that you once had. Ask him for a renewal of heart. Set your sights back on Heavenly things and He'll give you peace again. This world isn't long compared to eternity in His presence. There you won't long for anything you feel like you missed out on during your time on Earth. The surpassing greatness of God is far better. Joseph had how many years in prison before he was rewarded. Heaven surpasses that. I hope you find contentment again and renewed ardour for the Lord.

Two Baptists on the subject of prayer.

A. W. Pink, “…what is now being taught on the subject of prayer, and the deplorable thing is that scarcely a voice is lifted in protest. To say that “human destinies may be changed and moulded by the will of man” is rank infidelity—that is the only proper term for it. Should any one challenge this classification, we would ask them whether they can find an infidel anywhere who would dissent from such a statement, and we are confident that such an one could not be found. To say that “God has ordained that human destinies may be changed and moulded by the will of man”, is absolutely untrue. “Human destiny” is settled not by “the will of man,” but by the will of God. That which determines human destiny is whether or not a man has been born again, for it is written, “Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God”. And as to whose will, whether God’s or man’s, is responsible for the new birth is settled, unequivocally, by John 1:13—”Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but OF GOD”. To say that “human destiny” may be changed by the will of man, is to make the creature’s will supreme, and that is, virtually, to dethrone God. But what saith the Scriptures? Let the Book answer: “The Lord killeth, and maketh alive: He bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich: He bringeth low, and lifteth up. He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory” (1 Sam. 2:6-8). Link

John Gill provides a proper theological background to prayer, “…it should be said that God’s will is immutable, and cannot be altered by our crying. When the mind of God is not toward a people to do them good, it cannot be turned to them by the most fervent and importunate prayers of those who have the greatest interest in Him—”Then said the Lord unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before Me, yet My mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of My sight, and let them go forth” (Jer. 15:1). The prayers of Moses to enter the promised land is a parallel case.

Our views respecting prayer need to be revised and brought into harmony with the teaching of Scripture on the subject. The prevailing idea seems to be, that I come to God and ask Him for something that I want, and that I expect Him to give me that which I have asked. But this is a most dishonoring and degrading conception. The popular belief reduces God to a servant, our servant: doing our bidding, performing our pleasure, granting our desires. No; prayer is a coming to God, telling Him my need, committing my way unto the Lord, and leaving Him to deal with it as seemeth Him best. This makes my will subject to His, instead of, as in the former case, seeking to bring His will into subjection to mine. No prayer is pleasing to God unless the spirit actuating it is, “not my will, but thine be done”.

“When God bestows blessings on a praying people, it is not for the sake of their prayers, as if He was inclined and turned by them; but it is for His own sake, and of His own sovereign will and pleasure. Should it be said, to what purpose then is prayer? it is answered, This is the way and means God has appointed, for the communication of the blessing of His goodness to His people. For though He has purposed, provided, and promised them, yet He will be sought unto, to give them, and it is a duty and privilege to ask. When they are blessed with a spirit of prayer, it forebodes well, and looks as if God intended to bestow the good things asked, which should be asked always with submission to the will of God, saying, Not my will but Thine be done

Yours in the Lord,

jm
