Sometimes I don't know what to say, and I'll just stop and try to start over.

Does it matter who you pray to in the Trinity?

Is there any certain way to pray?

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He taught them to pray to the Father:

Luke 11:1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
Luke 11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

It's okay to address other members of the Trinity in our prayers, but the scripture directs us to pray primarily to the Father, in the name of Jesus.

The best way to pray is from the heart. Don't try to come up with anything, but rather open your heart and tell God where you are at. Something you can always do is praise Him. Praise is a wonderful way to start out your prayer and it is an essential part of our relationship to God. Before you ask for something, praise God for who He is and what He has done in your life, and in general.

If you can't think of anything, ask God to help you pray. You don't have to do all of the talking either, because prayer is communion with God. Listen for His voice and be sensitive to what His Spirit is leading you to do.

Prayer is mostly a Godly and humble conversation with your Creator and His beloved Son. Do it often, and read His Word ---starting in the Gospel of John.
I'll start reading John soon. Thanks.

Very helpful answer! Thank you.

You will have more results if you pray the Word; like The Lords Prayer;
Luke 11;
Our Father in heaven;
Hallowed be Your name;
Your kingdom come; Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven;
Give us day by day our daily bread;
And forgive us our sins;
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us;
And do not lead us into temptation;
But deliver us from the evil one; for Yours is the Kingdom; The Power and The Glory; Amen; So be it;
your responsibility; When you pray; believe you receive.

Amen.

When one of Jesus' disciples asked him how to pray, he told all his disciples to pray what believers call the Lord's prayer (Luke 11:1-4, Matthew 6:9-13). So believers should pray the Lord's prayer, every day, and learn to concentrate on everything it says. It's the perfect model prayer, from which any further, more specific prayers can follow. And there's no need to get long-winded or repetitious (Matthew 6:7-13, Ecclesiastes 5:2). It's better to pray a short prayer with faith than a long prayer with doubting (James 1:6-8).

In order for believers' prayers to be heard, and answered, they must not "ask amiss, that they may consume it upon their lusts" (James 4:3). Before believers pray, they must make sure that they've repented from all their sins (Hebrews 10:26-29), and done all that they can to make reparations to and peace with everyone whom they've ever wronged (Matthew 5:23-26, Romans 12:18, Acts 24:16, Hebrews 12:14). And they must make sure that they've completely forgiven everyone who has ever wronged them (Matthew 6:15). And when they pray for something, they must pray for it with an unwavering faith (James 1:6-8) and an unwavering perseverance (Luke 18:1-8). And they must actually be obeying God in their lives (1 John 3:22). And what they ask for must be according to God's will (1 John 5:14). They must be willing to put aside their own will, and seek God's will in all things (Luke 22:42, Matthew 6:10; 2 Corinthians 12:8-10, Deuteronomy 3:25-26).

Also, believers should give thanks (Philippians 4:6-7). And they should pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalms 122:6), and pray for all those in authority (1 Timothy 2:2). And they should pray that the Lord of the harvest will send forth laborers into his harvest (Matthew 9:38). Believers should also pray that they might be accounted worthy to escape the future tribulation (Luke 21:36), and that their flight (from the future Antichrist) won't be in the winter (Mark 13:18). And believers who have received the gift of tongues should pray for the separate gift of the interpretation of tongues (1 Corinthians 14:13).

Nick, wanna hear somethin funny? I've actually thought and PRAYED about how to respond.

3 things to remember when you pray...

1.) Know who God is to us. First off, he is love (1john 4:7), patient (2ndpeter 3:9) and can sympathize with all we have done or will do. He wishes for us to have a relationship with us that we might approach his throne of mercy (hebrews 4:16).

2. We must know who we are to God as we pray. We are his beloved children (romans 8:15, acts 17:28). He wants us to casts our burdens upon him so that he might sustain us show that he cares for us (peter or 2nd peter 5:7 and psalm 55).

3.) As we pray, we must believe that God hears us and that he holds true to his promises. What good is it if we don't believe we r talking to our heavenly father? We would be decieving ourselves (james 1:6). We must hold fast to his promises that he will meet our needs according to HIS will (1 john 5:14, john 13:14, 15:7, 16:24, parable of neighbor at night asking for bread.)

Praying in essence is really a conversation with God. And when we dont know what to say, the spirit speaks on our behalf (romans 8:26).So yes, it matters how you pray and who you pray to. Pray to Jesus, the father or even the spirit, they are one. :) God bless!

Don't stress about the words you use. God knows your heart, your mind, and your motivations. In fact, Romans 8:26 tells us that the Holy Spirit will even speak for us if the feelings are there, but the words don't come:

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans." -Romans 8:26

It also doesn't matter which person of the Trinity to address. I usually just use "Lord" which in my mind is aimed at God as a whole. However, there are some times when I speak specifically to Jesus or Holy Spirit.

It's good to find balance in prayer. We tend to ask first, thank second, and forget the praise and confess. Praise can be difficult, but I like to go to the psalms for ideas, and just use my own language.

Just find a style that works for you. Again, God cares about what's in your heart most of all.

I believe it's just as simple as this: just talk to God like you would to an ordinary person. Relax and be natural; I don't think God expects us to be in a certain "pose" or use eloquent, fancy words to reach His throne. If that's what really comes natural (and I realize it does for some people), then that's fine, but I don't think the Lord thinks of a person any less who doesn't pray like that. He is our Heavenly Father, but He also relates to us as a brother and friend, as well, and knows what we need and what we are going through. God honors a prayer from the heart.

Just my two-cents. Hope this helps. :)

I thought you might like to here this prayer; there are others on my blogs;

it is important to pray the word.

Pray of commitment;

Father in the name of Jesus; I offer up Thanksgiving; that you have called me to be a fellow -worker ; a joint promoter and labor to gather; with and for you; I commit my self to pray and not turn coward; Faint, loose heart or give up. Fearlessly and confidently and boldly I draw near to the throne of grace to help in good time for every need---appropriate help; and well timed help coming just when I; or others need it.
This is the cofidence that I have in you Father; that if we ask anything according to His will; His Word; He hears me; and if I know that He hears m; whatever I ask I know that I have the petitions that I have asked of Him; when I do not know what prayer to offer; and how to offer it
worthily as I ought; I thank you Father that the Holy Spirit; comes to my aid; and bears me up in my weeknes; my inability; to produce results; He; the Holy Spirit; goes to meet my supplication; and pleads in my behalf. Thank you Father for your answer. Parsonsmom

Eph.5.
Please read out loud; and agree;
Walk in Wisdom

I Thank you Father; that You said to be imitators of God; as dear children; And walk in love; as Christ also; has loved us and given Himself for us; as an offering; and a sacrifice to God; for a sweet-smelling aroma; and that we are putting away; all fornication; and all uncleanness; or covetousness; let it not even be named among us; as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness; nor foolish talking; nor coarse jesting; which are not fitting; but rather giving of thanks; For this you know; that no fornicator; unclean person; nor covetous person; who is an idolater; has any inheritance; in the kingdom of Christ; and God; that we will not let; anyone deceive us; with empty words; for because of these things; the wrath of God; comes upon the those of disobedience; do not be partakers with them;
For Father; we were once in darkness; now we are in the light; in the Lord; that we walk as children of light; for the fruit of the Spirit is; in all goodness; righteousness; and truth; finding out what is acceptable to the Lord; And we will have; no fellowship with the unfruitful works; of darkness; but rather expose them; For it is shameful; to speak of those things which are done by them in secret; But all things that are exposed; are made manifest by the light; for whatever makes manifest is light; He says: Awake; you who sleep; arise from the dead; and Christ will give you light; see then that we walk; circumspectly; not as fools; but as wise; redeeming the time, because the days are evil; That we; do not be unwise; but understand what the will of the Lord is. that we; do not be drunk with wine; in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to one another in psalms; and hymns; and spiritual songs; singing and making melody; in your heart to the Lord, we will give; thanks always for all things to God; the Father; in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; submitting to one another in the reveranuel fear; of God. Amen; so be it. parsonsmom.

SEVEN SCRIPTURAL PRINCIPLES GOVERNING PRAYER
[1] "And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, [everything in heaven and earth must be in accord with God’s will {His purpose and plan, Eph. 1:11} or it won’t happen] He hears us: And if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him" (I John 5:14-15).
[2] "Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, [I cannot stress enough the importance of a clean and clear conscience] then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we…
[3] keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight…
[4] And this is His commandment, That we should believe on the Name [and everything that that Name stands for and represents] of His Son Jesus Christ…
[5] And love one another, as He gave us commandment" (I John 3:21-23).

AN AMAZING SCRIPTURE ON PRAYER HIDDEN IN THE KING JAMES
This Scripture will blow you away if you have never before seen it properly translated. Here it is first in the King James Version:
"For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man sees, why does he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not then do we with patience wait for it. Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities, for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered" (Rom. 8:24-26).
Paul makes a connection between "hope" and "prayer." Hope is something we expect, but do not as yet experience. All of Christendom has this subject wrong when they claim that they are already in this life "saved" in the past tense. Paul tells us that we are "saved by hope," but if it is already a reality, then there is no need to still be hoping for it. He then states that, "Likewise…" (in the same way and manner)when it comes to praying, "we know NOT what we should pray for." Just as we do not yet SEE what it is that we "hope for" (we do not yet possess it,)likewise we do not see what we are to "pray for" based on another one of God’s rules, not based on our ignorance (or ‘as we ought’.) This much we can learn from the King James.
But the real problem with the King James is the next phrase "as we ought." That unfortunately does not carry the impact of what this most profound verse is telling us. The Greek word translated we ought is defined by Dr. Strong as follows:
G1163
de??
dei
die, deh-on'
“Third person singular active present of G1210; also de?? deon which is neuter active participle of the same; both used impersonally; it is (was, etc.) necessary (as binding): - beho[o]ved, be meet, must (needs), (be) need (-ful), ough[t]".
This is a dogmatic word—NECESSARY, BINDING, BEHOOVES, MUST BE, NEEDFUL.
Fifty-eight times this word die is translated "must;" and seven times "behooved;" and five times "must needs". When we read this verse in the King James and many versions that copy the King James, we get the feeling that Paul is stating that we just don’t know how to pray as well as we could or should pray. This is not the point of his declaration. Paul is stating that the knowledge necessary to pray according to what MUST BE (what God has already predestined and determined is and must be done in His plan and purpose,) none of us are aware. None of us knows for sure what MUST BE in God’s purpose, and so we cannot possibly always pray for what God desires for us to have. This being so then, God’s Spirit aids our infirmity in this area and helps us pray according to God’s will, which is just another way of saying according to what must be.
Notice how this word is emphatically used throughout the New Testament:
"And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not trouble: for all these things must [Gk; die] come to pass, but the end is not yet" (Matt. 24:6).
Jesus is not saying that these things "ought" come to pass, but rather they MUST come to pass.
  • Likewise: "…the Son of man must [Gk: die] suffer…" (Mark 8:31).
  • Not that He only "ought" to suffer. "…for such things must needs be…" (Mark 13:7).
  • "…the gospel must first be published…" (Mark 13:10).
  • "I must be about My Father’s business" (Luke 2:49).
  • "Ye must be born again" (John 3:7).
    "…that He must rise again from the dead" (John 20:9).
  • "…we must through much tribulation…" (Acts 14:22), etc., etc., etc.
Prayer must be in accord with what "must be." Here are a couple of Versions that bring this out clearly:
"And, in like manner also, the Spirit doth help our weaknesses; for, what we may pray for, as it behoveth us , we have not known, but the Spirit himself doth make intercession for us with groanings unutterable" (Rom. 8:26, Young’s Literal Translation.)
The word "behoove" means "necessary." Not what should or might be, but what is absolutely "necessary." And "necessary" is the first definition of this word in Strong’s Greek Dictionary.
"Now, similarly, the spirit also is aiding our infirmity, for what we should be praying for, to accord with what must be, we are not aware, but the spirit itself is pleading for us with inarticulate groanings" (Rom. 8:26, Concordant Literal New Testament.)
This Version, along with Young's gets the word order correct according to the Greek manuscripts, and therefore also showing that it is not "as we ought" that is being discussed, but "what must be."
Notice the word order from a few Interlinears:
"In like manner and also the Spirit jointly helps our weaknesses; for that which we should pray for according as it beho[o]ves [is ‘necessary’], we know not, but itself the Spirit makes intercession for us with groanings inexpressible" (Rom. 8:26, Interlinear Greek-English New Testament by Berry, Zondervan.)
"In like manner and also the spirit helps the weaknesses of us; the for what we should pray as it behoves, not we know, but itself the spirit intercedes on behalf of us with groans unspoken" (Emphatic Diaglott Interlinear.)
"AS-SAMELY YET AND THE spirit is-TOGETHER-supporting to-THE UN-FIRMNESS OF-US THE for ANY WE-SHOULD-BE-PRAYING according-to-WHICH IS-BINDING NOT WE-HAVE-PERCEIVED but SAME THE spirit IS-OVER-pleadING to-groanings UN-TALKED" (Concordant Greek Text, an Ultraliteral English Translation in the Sublinear.) (All underlines are mine.)
The reason that translators and expositors do not teach the truth on this verse is because they don’t believe it is true as written in the manuscripts. It appears from most translations and virtually all teaching on the subject of prayer, that they cannot believe the truth of this verse because it substantiates the Sovereignty of God and contradicts man’s fabled free will. To better understand what is being taught here on prayer, I will now quote Rom. 8:26 and continue through verses 27 and 28 from the Concordant Literal New Testament:
Now similarly, the spirit also is aiding our infirmity, for what we should be praying for, to accord with what must be, we are not aware, but the spirit itself is pleading for us with inarticulate groanings. Now He Who is searching the hearts is aware what is the disposition of the spirit, for in accord with God [with God’s will] is it pleading for the saints. Now we are aware that God [KJV leaves out "God"] is working all together for the good [things don’t "work together for good" by themselves—ALL good comes from God—James 1:17] of those who are loving God…"
Let’s now understand this most profound truth. It isn’t just that, "…we know not what we should pray for as we ought…" No, it is much more profound than just that; it is that "….for we know not what we should pray for, to accord with what MUST BE, we are not aware…" Why does the spirit aid our infirmity? What is our infirmity? Our infirmity is that we don’t know what to pray for that will absolutely always be in accord with what must be God’s will, and God’s will is "what must be." And since none of us has perfect foreknowledge of what God’s will must be, God’s spirit aids those who are obedient to Him, in requesting and praying about the right things, so our prayers aren’t in vain.
It is the will and plan and preordained purpose of God Almighty, that’s what "MUST BE." "THY WILL BE done" (Matt. 6:10). Yes, God’s will MUST be done—always! One day we will all come to believe and appreciate the fact that God is Sovereign. God is always right. God always does what is best and perfect. And so it is vain to pray for something that is NOT "in accord with what MUST BE."
And only then does verse 28 make sense. Things don’t "just happen" to people who love and obey God (as most translations suggest in this verse.) No, we should now be willing to accept the truth "…that GOD [The King James leaves out the ‘God’ in this verse as if things just work themselves out without God] is working all together for the good…" And how is it that God works?
"In Whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him Who works ALL THINGS AFTER THE COUNSEL OF HIS OWN WILL" (Eph. 1:11).
And so, if we always pray according to God’s Will, with a clean conscience, obeying the commandments of God, and are aided by the Holy Spirit of God to pray only "in accord with what MUST BE," we will begin seeing answered prayer where we may have been frustrated in the past

Heres some verses I love that I collected and put together when it comes to prayer starting with his house. Maybe these could be helpful in some way, they were helpful to me

My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer

And we are His House

Thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly

And when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking

Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

Lord, teach us to pray...

And he said unto them, When ye pray, say,

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation,

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil

Men ought always to pray, and not to faint

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.

The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

Pray ye the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

Pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you

All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them

Wherefore also we pray always for you

That God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power

And pray that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding

That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Ye have not, because ye ask not

Ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him

This is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men

We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you

And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment

In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night:and God said,

Ask what I shall give thee.

Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

And God said unto him,

Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;

Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart

Did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?

Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Is any thing too hard for the LORD?

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus

And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me!

And God granted him that which he requested.

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;

Behold, I have done according to thy words

I cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

Ask what you will,

Pauls was..."that I might know him"

And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee?

Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Peace to you :groupray:
