• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Does God talk to us through OCD?

I have suffered from OCD on and off for several years. Before I was a Christian, I would say things like "If you step on a crack it means that something bad will happen," or "If you roll an even number on a dice it means that something bad will happen if you go to that party,"

My OCD stopped for a while after I became a Christian but it has recently come back. Now, I think things like "God, if I toss a coin and get heads it means that if I do that specific activity something bad will happen,". Sometimes I am really specific. I'll say things like "God, if I watch exactly five youtube videos before my battery runs out, it means that I can do that activity. If my battery runs out before or after the fifth video, it means that if can't do that activity or something bad will happen,". And then if my battery runs out before the fifth video ends and I still do the activity anyway, I end up feeling really guilty.

Does God answer or respond to these types of OCD rituals. Is he answering me, or is it just OCD?

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. " - James 1:5-8

I'm going to say probably not. God has mercy on people in such a state; I was one of them. But his communication of that mercy didn't come through answering every insecure question I had, one by one. Rather, he communicated to me through the Holy Spirit certain principles I could trust in to give me peace.

Most of the time I would say no, because of the nature of obsessions and fear and what the Bible says about them. But recently I had some experiences where I believe He was speaking through "the hand of Providence". Basically, God was speaking through some events etc. and I did believe God used both my own mental health issues as well as some of a friend to point out areas to be dealt with. With myself it was the fact I was nursing a grudge, with my friend he had some maturity issues when it came to using people etc.

Anyway I think it is possible or at least God using them in his Providence for things like building character, or maybe confronting some issues in your life, but I still think that most obsessions and compulsions are the opposite of most of the Truth advocated in the Scriptures, especially the nature of Faith and Peace.

No God does not make bargains with us, so it is your ocd.

Please read this article on ocd, then discuss it with your family, friends and your doctor/therapist:-
International OCD Foundation | 25 Tips for Succeeding in Your OCD Treatment

Last point promises, vows etc made under duress are not valid.
If your ocd causes you to promise to do something or something nasty will happen.
That is not a binding promise, ignore it, In the same way the article says treat your ocd voice.
By just acknowledging it and the ignoring it.

It definitely sounds like OCD to me! Are you currently receiving any help in treating your OCD?
