I think it is possible for God to warn us of something through a spiritual dream. If there is nothing to learn from it then I would say it is probably from your environment. What you eat, watch, listen to or even entertain in your mind.
Pray and ask God what is not of Him to remove it from your rest.

Good Advice, someone online made a claim that God gives them nightmares as way of prophetic discernment. The closet I ever came to anything like that was in Denver, CO. A local Occult shop had a dummy in the corner who would turn around if a evil person walked in. Some other Christians told me it turns it back when godly Christians walk in. So, one day when I got off the buss, I went in to witness to them. The dummy caught fire as I came in singing "what a friend, we have in Jesus..." While the store was burning down, I was telling its owner about Jesus. This was back in the mid to late 70's --- good luck finding the local news story about it. I once had a copy of the story, but lost it during a move.

God doesn't give us nightmares, but he can sure help deal with them. Satan lingers in nightmares and God comes along and crushes him.

It can feel like a nightmare when God shows you something that is going to happen. It can feel like a nightmare when God is warning you. Along comes maturity as a christian, in knowing the difference. My daughter has amazing end time sorda dreams, and they are something to be afraid of being a part of, as to warn others of what is to come and the horrors of not living for Christ and giving your life to Him before it is too late. She once had a nightmare (as she called it) awhile back and came to me in tears because she could not sleep.

When she told me the dream I was in awe......reason being is because it gave me a strategy to use in my life and for everyones life that would apply it. Within a week my life changed drastically, praying for my husbands salvation for 10 yrs did not work, crying pleading, fasting EVERYTHING known to man. But when she told me this dream, light bulbs went off and I was like YES this is it......I applied what she experienced in the dream. And shall I say satan showed up with force but the peace of God rested on my home, hubby was saved, sancitified filled with the Holy Spirit within a week. Call me crazy, i do not care, for I have many witnesses to the great event.

What she saw and felt "to her" was horrible and a nightmare. But to those who have spiritual ears to hear what "thus saith the Lord" it was a God send answer to strategy and prayer.

But again, yes you have nightmare, some u throw in the trash. But thru many years of fighting and battling and serving the Lord, I have learnt to be pliable to God speaking or even satan. When satan is stupid enough to attack you while you are sleeping AND HE DOES you as a spiritual christian following the Lord should wake with total strategy and revelation. Being said that is .....satan is so stupid that he tells on himself by showing up in your sleep, giving a way his precious mark and strategy that he is after you. He is a coward, no doubt.

Guess it depends on how you define nightmare.
-"Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him." Dan 2:1 He even admits how disturbed he is to others - "..And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.." Dan 2:3 " Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation." "Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven." " I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.

-Pharaoh "And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh." Gen 41 "And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace." Gen 41:16

-this one says "horror" "And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him." Gen 15:12 This is about the important covenant Yahweh made with Abram.

Summary:
Both Daniel and Joseph got the interpretation from Yahweh. Yahweh also explained to Abram about the covenant. Everything Yahweh does has a purpose.

Not to terrify us but as a way for the brain to cope with things, sometimes.

I grew up with a reoccurring dream that would start frightening and end frustrating. Sometimes I'd have it multiple times a week. Over 10 years. Let's just say this dream haunted me and it wouldn't go away.

I was in therapy when I was older, and rather than tell me what she thought the dream meant, the therapist told me there is a theory that if the person having the chronic dream finds out the meaning, the dream will stop and finally leave them alone in peace.

I went to the bookstore and pulled down all these dream manuals, and they all said the same meaning, in exact wording one book had a picture and the words 'psychological and verbal abuse and torture.'. Once I saw those words it clicked with me that I had been abused for years in an unusual way I never realized before. I started reading on that type of abuse and it all made such sense.

I finally got rid of the dream when I discovered its meaning. The therapist was right. It has been almost twenty years now and the dream never returned.

Since I place the hand of God with everything like that, I think He must have been involved with how our brains work to give us such dreams. Discovering the meaning explained a lot and gave me peace, which is of course the best outcome with that kind of dream.
