  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have attended the Church of God and Assemblies of God my whole life. I am engaged to a beautiful young lady that has been United Methodist her whole life. We recently visited First United Methodist in Bedford, Texas. It seems a whole lot like a Pentecostal church. I have heard of charismatic Methodists, and they have a group in the Methodist church called Aldersgate. I am assuming that FUMC Bedford is part of the Aldersgate movement. Does anyone know exactly what they believe and practice in charismatic Methodists churchs. Are they close in belief to classical pentecostals or charismatics?

Greetings fromcentex:

I personally have not heard of a movement within the UMC nationally which goes by the title "Aldersgate". I think this is probably a local group (A Cell Type) which takes its name from the Aldersgate Experience which the Methodist founder John Wesley had at Aldersgate,England. There Wesley stated "His heart was strangely warmed", and from then on, his ministry became, a ministry of unction and spirital power. From this point a Revival broke out in England from which the Methodist came. I think this may be where this group gets their name. A group which has had their "Hearts strangely warmed" by a visitation from the Holy Spirit.

I attend a church in College Station, Tx called Aldersgate UMC. It is not a very traditional methodist church. A lot of the basic doctrine of the Methodist Church is taught from what I understand (this is my first Methodist church that I've regularly attended) but the worship is very modern and relativly charasmatic with a relaxed atmosphere. If you're wondering anymore you can PM, IM, email, kick, smack, or whatever you feel like to get my attention and ask questions.
