My daughter is in 4th grade now and I have met so many of her friends due to play days and sleepovers etc, since she was in 1st grade. She goes to public school. She has had so many friends, and i notice that most of the parents allow their kids to diet on junk. I'm not talking about a piece of candy here and there.. I'm noticing her friends simply wont eat anything unless its junk food. We try to make a basic turkey and cheese sandwich for lunch and my daughter has no problem eating it, but the friends do. They want a quesadilla, so my wife makes one. They then say they don't want it because its nasty, so we have to throw it out. Manners are an issue too. They want ice cream. The mother of one of them was there once, and didn't even tell her kid anything when this happened. Instead just let the kid skip eating and then later gave her chips and ice cream. I also notice another parent giving their kid the choice.. "its lunch time.. do you want to get lunch or eat ice cream?" and of course the inevitable response from the kid to eat ice cream. One time i was out with the mother and her daughter at a del taco. When her daughter noticed my daughter eating a burrito, she asked her mother about it. the mother simply responded with "Oh, you won't like it." and gave her fries for lunch. I asked her if she eats real food ever and she got all upset with me, then said she only eats fries or chips because she's picky. I do recall a commercial several years ago, regarding type 2 diabetes when the kid eats constant junk, but never researched it myself to know if eating junk food actually causes it. Is that just a myth? Anyhow, I notice the majority of the kids she brings over are this way and parents just allow them to eat whatever. Is this more common than i realized before, or has it always been this way? Why are so many parents like this nowadays?
