  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does a tithe have to be monetary? If things are really tough, can you pay your tithe in other ways, for example, volunteering your time? If it has to be monetary, what if you simply can't afford to give your 10% a particular week/month because you have to pay your bills/feed your family?

Thanks in advance!

Hi 'Big Sid'. Tithing is a God given principle found in the Scripture before the law was given. There should be no legality about it,but we give willingly,as we are able. God blesses Faithfulness.

Hi Big Sid,

I get the same most weeks being a single mum with kids and not being able to work as much as i would like, I ask God on those weeks that I don't have enough and give what He tells me, and when I get extra income in then i do both my Tithe and offering. I find myself on the weeks that i have just Tithed anyway if though I don't have enough money for food and stuff that God comes through. We must walk in Faith.

Use your tithes to feed the poor & preach Jesus' love he showed on cross.

I don't see why a tithe has to be money. I'm pretty sure in Bible days a lot of people didn't have coins or silver of gold.
As Peter said he didn't have but what he had he gave.
I just saw an article last night about a free medical clinic in Calif.(LA I think). Many people were coming to it because their deductible was so high.
How nice if we could give healing by faith in Jesus.

Abraham was the first to tithe, and the scriptures say he gave of his substance to Melchelzedec the priest. Didn't say it was money.

No, it doesn't have to be.

If you have goods and not money, you should give goods to the church. In the bible, this is what they were doing many times. Often, they would bring things like grain harvest, or even sheep / cattle.

Some preachers I listen to would tithe their buttons on their shirt if they were broke. Once, one of his daughters was going to tithe her new doll and the pastor went to stop her, but then God stopped him.

Leviticus 27:30 - A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD.

I have been giving my tithe to support my wife's ministry.... even though it is somewhat informal.... but I attempt to dedicate about ten percent of my time to outreach to the lost through the internet.

You should read a book about miraculous prosperity.

You end up wanting to give. The devil will try to stop my giving now that I want to do it. It was the first thing he came against when I began to turn to Christ.

At the core of God's prosperity is the miraculous eternal wealth we have in Christ. Because of this unlimited wealth which passes all the limitations of natural resources in the natural realm, we can give, and we can give more. We can increase our giving every year, and increase it more and more.

If you don't have faith in God's prosperity you will simply run out of money and goods. But if you believe God, you already have unlimited wealth and you no longer even believe poverty exists. It exists for those who don't know, but it doesn't exist in a Christian's life who knows what God has done.

And when you believe this way according to God's word (2 Corinthians 9:8), you simply increase and increase, even though you give more and more.

It's also a great scam to steal your money. BUT, does that mean we should reject God's word on the matter that we are blessed already and rich, already? I think not. There are some who exploit it, but I don't give to their ministries. I give to those who preach the supernatural abundance and believe it themselves, so therefore, they don't need one dime of my money. And I wouldn't give them a dime of it if they asked for it. I give it because I'm blessed of God, and I want to support the ministry they are doing, and they have sewn the word into my life and miraculously blessed me by doing so.

Last year, I realized I wanted to do this verse: Mark 7:11-13

Men were not giving to their family because they used tithes as an excuse not to support family.

It's not from God, so I wrote a 2k check to my father for all that I had borrowed from him. He wouldn't take it but I was able to honor him. Then I started assisting my sister with her new child.

God has blessed me so much that I've fallen behind the 10% giving. My income had increased so much because of his blessing that I had fallen behind. I can write 1k checks at church and it's not enough!

My goal for this year is to get up to 12%. Plus some donation of time and effort on things.

I also think some types of giving are worth more than others. The best gift I gave God was $50 once. The devil was messing with me all that day. Finally I told the devil, "If you mess with me one more time, I'm giving $50 at church tonight!" And so I did. I was poor then. I was behind on bills. I was having trouble keeping my job because of mental health reasons. When I gave it, the minister saw it and said, "God will bless it!" And God did.

I stopped being poor when I finally decided from God's word, I could not be poor by the authority of God that it was impossible. I could be robbed of every possession, lose my job, my dwelling and my clothes, and I would still believe in my richness. And I would just proclaim 7 times what was stolen from me, as a legal demand on God's kingdom and authority.

So tithing is great! But it's not really the verse I use. I use 2 Corinthians 9:8 and give by God's grace. That way it's not me focusing on what I can do for God, but what God has already done for me. And from the abundance God has commanded upon me, I give. It's supernatural. Not long ago, one of my failed investments went up 1000%. After I realized I had been dumb about it, I repented to God over it and some angels came to me in a dream and after that it went up 1000% and will still increase.

I could preach this! :D

Remember whose money it is. :)

“Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ “In tithes and offerings. (Malachi 3:8, 1984 NIV)

God wants to bless you! It's you who have to clear out the hindrances (with his help).

Not that I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what may be credited to your account. I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. (bold mine, Philippians 4:17-19, 1984 NIV)

This is a delightful example of someone living by faith even though she isn't giving a strict 10% every time.

I'm a believer in giving 10% no matter what (even though I have failed to when not having much money) because it is God who is providing you with housing, food, and clothing, not your "own" money. It's the best 10% you can spend, because you get far more provision in return. But it must be done through entrusting yourself to Jesus (who loves you a huge amount).

But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; (James 1:6-7, 1984 NIV)

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2, 1984 NIV)

Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you”; (Matthew 9:29, 1984 NIV)
