Do your religious beliefs effect HOW you play games?

I tend to favor being good even in Dungeons and Dragons. A lot of times I play as the healer class. Although, sometimes I play as a darker character depending on the game and the story.

I generally tend to make decisions in games based off of what I'd do in real life.
So whenever I'd play Knights of the Old Republic or Fallout 3, I always selected the responses in conversations that closely matched how I would actually respond.

But then I usually end up making a separate "evil" file where my character's absolutely horrific, just to see what the other side's like

Sometimes I create totally evil characters in DnD.. well WoD more specifically though. Not to play but as NPCs. I tried re-creating Mr. Gold/Rumple for my fairytale campaign and I ended up making him more crazy which was really fun. I also made the Evil Queen as well. I find it fun to flesh out the villains because it's who specifically the party has to deal with. Without the villains then the story goes dull.

I was just watching an interview with Lana Parrilla who plays the Evil Queen/Regina in OUAT and what she said is interesting. She was asked why people want to see bad guys. Her response was that people like to live vicariously through them. If we acted as such in real life we'd be in jail. It's true though because gaming and watching such shows are an escape. It's not real. Now, I have issues actually playing my PCs as bad.... I just can't seem to do it yet I can control the villain as an NPC.

Have played Civ IV: Fall From Heaven with the Rise of Erebus modmod quite a few times of lately. Chances are you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Anyway - there is an option to go lawful evil with the standard knight in shiny armour faction there by choosing a religious fanatic as leader. I'm not much for mindlessly following the usual tropes when playing fantasy games, but this twist suddenly made them seem quite interesting to me. Like - who cares about secondary things like rampaging orcs or necromancers when tree-hugging elven heretics (liberals ) are leading people astray from the pure message of salvation? Those orcs and necromancers are at least honest about what they are doing.

The same applies to me when playing evil - I usually try to represent a more benign form of evil, like having certain taboos such as not harming animals or respecting the elderly. I almost never play as anything chaotic though. No fun in not playing with power.

It did for awhile. I came to the realization that they are just games. These aren't real people being violent to one another. Just made up characters.

Now as far as the language is concerned, I absolutely hate hearing the Lord's or Almighty God's name taken in vain, whether it's in movies, video games or in a TV show. When I hear it, I try to get it out of my mind, and very quickly!

Nope, I play games for their entertainment value and it is fun to make choices in games you wouldn't make in real life. I generally take the "dark" or "evil" path in games, while my wife generally makes the "good" choices, but not always.

Not really. I'm a combat pragmatist by nature, so as long as a decision in an RPG doesn't involve threatening a bystander or causing needless harm, I have no problems with it. Weapons- who cares? So long as they're efficient and humane, that's good enough for me. I'd have problems with using an in-game weapon designed to cause painful death or something like that.

In strategy games like Total War, I'm different. I'm pretty cold and calculating in those, with my wars either being self-defense or aimed at acquiring resources. I generally have a "Blitzkrieg" sort of mindset when I do the latter: you strike hard, you strike fast, you do what you mean to do, then you negotiate a peace. I generally aim for ending the war within 3-4 years.Of course, if that doesn't go to plan and ends up being a long, drawn-out campaign, peace definitely starts looking appealing regardless of what I have or haven't gained.

My beliefs do effect the way I play games. I like the Civilization games, I know it might sound corny but I often think how would Jesus build a civilization. And I try to use his principals of giving to others, and not being warlike, i.e. I try to avoid war. But occasionally I play a game where I just let out the inner beast, and just invade everything. That being said I am trying to play games less now days.

While we all tend to say no... I think there are limits we would not cross into. Such as I had a atheist game who played a japanese game about rape. I read up on it (because I couldn't believe such a game existed) and its a 3d game (like most modern games) where you essentially assault, molest, rape/have sex with teenage looking girls against their will. There is full nudity, bodily fluids, sounds....aka its porn but as a interactive video game. So when we say our religious beliefs do not affect how we play in a game, I think they do in cases like this. Which hopefully everyone would agree you would NOT play this game.

THose kind of things aside normally my beliefs do not carry over into a game. I've played as good guys, bad guys, neutral guys, girls, aliens, wizards...etc. Should we play this kind of stuff? Well thats iffy. I think it depends on if the game affects you or not. Though I imagine God would prefer we don't play them regardless.

I think the Game Master would have said "Play as you would have others, play you _____".

I could be wrong, but the funnest thing about games is not how you play them, but how you perceive the world, having played _____ _____.

Although, many think the content is important (which I do understand, in principle), the fact is that spiritually, games are always more about transcendence (which fundamentally, can only be for something good _____ (let the reader consider _____ _____ _____ ) ) than they are about anything else (avatar or not, nexus or not, portal or not, level or not _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ ) .

I've heard about that game. :-/ Not trying to be racist or anything, but what's up with Japanese media? They glorify sex WAY more than America, and that's saying a lot.

Yeah I don't think its racist to say it. Japan has an obsession with sexuality and teen girls. Schoolgirls in schoolgirl outfits is a big fetish there. My friend who lives theres even took a picture of a vending machine outside that sells used panties from teens. Not saying all japanese people are like that because I know plenty that aren't. But overall the country gets its reputation for a reason.

Hi I would like to take steps to have this game banned. We need to write to governments about this, especially Japan. Could you private message me with a link to this game. Don't post it openly I don't think it is wise to share the link publicly. I suggest that you write a letter to the Japanese also stressing how you found this offensive. I think we also need to pass it on to organizations that focus on protecting women.

It definitely affects, I play Mass Effect (sci fi RPG ) that lets you make choices with a karma effect on your personality, called renegade (bad) and paragon (good). I constantly choose the good side. The dialogue choices are full of needing to make moral decisions. Sometimes they are tough, like deciding to side a friend in conflict with another of your friends.

Civilization is a game that lets you choose leaders that have different special abilities. I avoid choosing Byzantium's leader, who allows multiple religions

Believe me, it's a pretty infamous game in the gaming world. The social ramifications for those that are discovered to have played it are probably enormous because of how sick and perverse it is. Add to that, I don't think it's sold by any major dispensaries. You don't really need to worry about it.

Besides, it's already Adults Only, which is the closest thing to a ban you can get to my knowledge (1st Amendment and all).

I was playing Metal Gear Solid V, and infiltrated someone's Forward Operating Base that had "666" in their insignia. Once I conquered that base, I verbally said something like "I hereby declare this base captured in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!"
