For those who were young readers.... How about Trixie Belden series?

I have been on the forum since last Sept. but have missed many things because there is so much to see.... I bet this had many interesting things shared.....This is my first time viewing this thread....

I used to love watching Groucho Marx and the Marx Brothers movies. He had some great one liners. One of my favourites is "Last night I shot an elephant in my pyjamas.....How he got in my pyjamas I'll never know!"
I think his show was "The 64 dollar question". We never got the show up in Canada where I lived. I never learned about it till much later on.

I did also make many a number such aeroplane models
They were sold by many a 'small' shop
which, may very well have been a large shop VERY FULL
My first experiment was a little over ambitious
as first, one had to identify all the 'tatooed shapes'
on the sheets of balsa-wood in the box
and WITH 'wings and a prayer' ACCURACY
one, would disect the PIECES from the sheets

With time, experience showed, that minor mistakes
could be repaired, with balsa cement and a small length
of open-weave bandage-dressing (on inside surfaces

The tissue-paper that we used
was cemented over the ribs of the wings, tail
and fuselage of the plane
and then
carefully 'brushed' with 'aeroplane dope'
(a heady mix of confused 'thought-trains' there!)

When the 'dope' had dried
the tissue had taken on the appearance
and also the texture of,
a kind of 'plastic-filled paper (greaseproof ?)
this then , to provide the,
wind resistant /damage resistant 'BODY'
to the 'AIRCRAFT' with, minimum weight-penalty

*ais: my first attempt tho doomed to fail as a 'success'
was! nevertheless EXPERIENCE in all the skills needed
for the followwing successes in rubber band flight
and gliding

My best flying experience
was launching a Kite bigger than me
awwww I felt like I could fly away with it

Remember the Dick and Jane books from grades 1 and 2? And it wasn't long after that we had to memorize the "times tables" all the way up to 12 X 12. There were no calculators back then in school. We actually had to use a pencil and paper and our head! to do all the arithmetic. In todays world they start the grade one and two's on computers.

Oh yes! I do!
the memories of 'repetitious-learning'
comes a-flooding back to me
THE T I M E S - T A B L E S wow!

but once accomplished!
LIGHT .....then shone on other mysteries
'financial' and why it was ( or, always-seemed)
was-it that 'other families' kids'
got bicycles for-xmas (?)
so, I was polite, helpful and trustworthy
and would go shopping to be rewarded with pennies from the change and often just a thank-you!
I saved-up my threepence and sixpenny 'bits'
and my pennies would weigh QUITE A BIT
and bought plastic a i r f i x plane kits
from, a parade of shops near-town (City-Centre)
and supplies of polystyrene cement
almost as volatile as the dope used on balsa later...

memories ! tch there was this little girl
across the road from the house
in which I 'lived' with 'my-family'
She had three brothers while I, had two and a sister
There was a mown field on the far side of the road
which ran across the 'bottom-end' of our's
both sibling groups would gather there
on Saturdays that werent too bad (weatherwise)

well yuh cannot roll around in wet grass ?

I forgot to mention davedajobauk that at the end of each schoolday we would again have to stand beside our desks and sing "God Save Our Queen" (we had a picture of Liz above our blackboard) which I'm sure you can appreciate. I also remember 'art class' trying to draw the Union Jack on an 8X10 sheet of paper. Man it was tough trying to get all those line straight and parallel until in 1965 Canada got it's own flag.

and singing the anthem and saying the Lord's Prayer
and saying Goodnight Miss

lol and taking my Coronation home 1953 to 2007
its a long reign

But God is the eternal Father, Son and Holy Ghost

I never had a problem with the 'Straight Lines'

The trick, is to deal with the BENT ones

I also remember when Noddy was just a character in a book. People this side of the pond might not even know who Noddy is.

The series 'hometown' was in New York...
a Farm outside of the Hudson....

I was born in Detroit...and lived in the surrounding suburbs growing up.... so no, not just used in Canada.

They were written between the years 1948 and 1986...I was born in 1953...I really enjoyed reading them....
