• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I think any of us could get it. Only Alzheimer's to my knowledge has a link to genetic history though. Other types of dementia are simply age and health related.

Some types of dementia are temporary, other types more permanent and debilitating.

Best is just to stay in good health, and trust in God to see us through.

Alzheimer's runs in my family, and I try to stay in good humor over the possibility myself.

Dementia is an umbrella term that covers multiple things, and there are still many unknown causes for the different types.

Not really no! Bad lifestyle choices can cause dementia. For example alcohol misuse can lead to memory problems in some people. They may end up being given a dementia diagnosis ( alcohol induced ).

Certain medications are also known to cause memory problems as a side effect, but I don't know how far one's memory problems would go if these meds are not stopped or changed.

My friend has Dementia now the doctor has found. Now I wonder if I could get it? Thanks for the help.
I don't think it has to be hereditary. There are different causes for dementia.

I was meant to add this the other day but forgot. Head injuries in some cases, can cause memory issues. Growths & tumors in the brain for some, can also eventually lead to dementia. Substance misuse, can cause the same issues, in the long run. Bad diet, can also contribute. Other illnesses, can eventually lead to this also . So it can be anything really.
