Do you have a Compass?
Finding your way around a major university can be a tough task, and if you have a hard time with directions it is even harder. That is the case for women who happen to have Turner Syndrome. It is a genetic disorder where instead of two X Chromosomes, they have one, or one and a fraction of another. One of the side effects is having little, if any, spatial intelligence. A psychology professor was describing this syndrome, and told of a student he had who had it. In high school she only had to take three turns to get to school, yet, everyday she would get lost, she was never able to memorize the route to school. When she went to college she had a much bigger task, getting around campus. Her solution, a model of the campus she carried with her. She would line up her model with the only building visible anywhere from campus, and then find her way. She had to do this everyday, after every class, but it didnt phase her at all. This student had determination, a strong will to complete a task despite an obstacle that stood in her way. Nothing in life comes easy, we are told, we have to work at everything we do, even our Christian walk. A walk that will have its share of obstacles that will stand in our way, a walk that requires determination, without it we will never be able to fully enjoy the pleasures of this walk.
This story also has another facet to it, the model she used was her guide, a guide to get around the university. She couldnt live a moment without the model, it was vital to her successfully going from building to building. In the Christian life we have a model, a guide to help us successfully make it day to day, if we dont use it we will get lost. Our model, the Bible, 2 Timothy 3:16-17: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
