  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A lot of times it is so easy to grasp a concept in Scripture and be excited about it (e.g. the love of God and freedom in Him), but forget the other perfectly holy aspects of God (justice and obeying Him).

It is such a wonderful revelation to understand and grasp the incredible love of God. It is so easy to go overboard and forget the holiness of God too. There is a perfect balance because He is perfect.

Is sin silly?
No, but this argument is.

To fear the Lord is to give Him the worship, honor, and glory due Him. To give Him reverence, and to acknowledge that it is He who made us, and we belong to Him. To fear the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. But His perfect love casts out fear. Not the reverence, the worship, the acknowledgement of who He is, all that stays.

I feared the Lord until I became His child. Now my fear is evolved into respect, a higher reverence, and an intense desire to make Him pleased with me above all else.

What about all the scripture that tells us as his children to have Godly fear? There are quite a few, but also some that give comfort. What do you think of this verse? It combines both fear and comfort.

Ac 9:31 Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

The fear of the Lord for Christians is different than the fear the sinner experiences, we as Christians are commanded to come boldly to the throne of God claiming the blood of Jesus. In contrast, the sinner in the bible is pictured as someone who runs away even though no one is pursuing.

We should never forget that our God is holy and deserves our awe and reverence, but we should also never forget that He willingly laid down His life so that we can have unmerited access to the Father. He does not condemn us as sinners but declares and marks us as sons and daughters by His own blood. We have been adopted into the beloved and we are now heirs to the promise of His rest.

I still believe though, that if we were to see God in all His glory, we could do nothing but fall at His feet in fear and trembling, the utter otherness of God is like nothing we can fathom. He so much greater, above, separate from anything we have experience with in this world, we would have no choice but to fall down before Him in desperate wonder in awe of His majesty. His holiness would instantly dissolve any self righteousness that we think we have, and we would see ourselves as the pitiful creatures that we are before Him.

For years I found the term God-fearing puzzling. It contradicted my own personal experience of a benevolent God. Best answer I have is that the early years of my life were turbulent enough that when I looked for answers, I found them in a benevolent God. Compared with the actions of uncaring and sometimes hostile people, that looked pretty good.

And though I put God on the back-burner for years, I never forgot to "treat others as I wanted to be treated". For years I've felt blessed ... so much so that when relocating to a new job fifteen years ago, I even told people I lived in "God's country". It's nice here ... and not just in a state of mind way, LOL.

Just my $0.02 ... no profound insights ...

It may help to look at the definition of JAH which is derived from YAH which comes from YAH WEH which came from God's answer to Moses at the burning bush saying, "I AM THAT I AM".

(JAH is only found once in KJV in Psalm 68:4)

Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rides upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him. <-----> Psalm 68:4

JAH -

Ve"he*ment (?), a. [L. vehemens, the first part of which is perhaps akin to vehere to carry, and the second means mind: cf. F. véhément. Cf. Vehicle, and Mental.]

2. Very ardent; very eager or urgent; very fervent; passionate; as, a vehement affection or passion. Vehement instigation." Shak. Vehement desire." Milton. Syn. -- Furious; violent; raging; impetuous; passionate; ardent; eager; hot; fervid; burning.

For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God. <-----> Deuteronomy 4:24

For our God is a consuming fire. <-----> Hebrews 12:29

Job (who is described as a "perfect and upright man"), talked confidently about how he would declare his case before The Lord and be justified, while he yet was personally unacquainted with His up close and unveiled Presence...but once The Lord appeared immediately before him, his reaction was quite unlike what he had proclaimed it would be... saying -

I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye sees thee.
Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.
<-----> Job 42:5+6

Now, if Job was religiously perfect and morally upright, why was he overwhelmed with a sense of self-abhorrence and need to utterly repent?

Was it not because he underestimated The Greatness, The Power, The Glory, Yea, The Vehemence of The Lord his God ?!!

Did he not wrongly suppose he would met Him as a man, as being somewhat of a peer, or a near equal, one with which he could stand toe to toe and eye to eye with ? Ahhh, but such is not at all the case !!

These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thought that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. <-----> Psalm 50:21

Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man. <-----> Isaiah 47:3

Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. <-----> Isaiah 8:13

And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repents him of the evil. <-----> Joel 2:13

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: <-----> 1st Peter 3:15

It's ungodly fear which perfect love casts out.

But being instantaneously struck with exceedingly great fear and soul shaking pangs of terror, at the sight of an Tremendously Powerful, Terribly Hot and Burning Jealous and Most Vehement God is purely a natural reaction to His Revealed Supernatural Self.

Least that's the impression present with this earthen vessel.

Yes. I love Him soooooo much, and yes, i fear Him. He is precious to me and more and more i have an aversion to offending Him. His holiness is beautiful and His glory and His glorious grace, mercy, and loving kindness is inexplicable.

He maketh my heart to sing. How can i NOT sing?

Hey, I am full agreement with you. The Lord is good and I praise God for His mercy and for delivering me from my rebellion against Him. Now I don't want to rain on your parade or anything but the song you shared is copyrighted and it was illegally uploaded to youtube. It's illegal to listen to it, or to share it. Just letting you know so we can pay honor to the Lord properly.

That's the spirit!

Psalm 100

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!
Serve the LORD with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the LORD, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the LORD is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.

Really? ok, i'll remove it. Awwwww that's a tragedy. i didn't know it was illegal

All of this is a widening of the eyes, for yes, His holy-ness will surely flatten us. The splendor of His pure holy-ness in all it's glory is something nearly unbearable in the human realm. I have been meditating on how furiously God must love us. It took such a furious love to sacrifice His only begotten Son. As if He was saying to the enemy 'you CANNOT have them!' And placed HIMSELF, via His Son, on that sacrifice table.

His love matches His holy-ness. It's furious. It is a mighty fearful thing.

As i was typing this, a verse came to mind. That word "fearful" is begging a study of its own.

Here's the verse that came to mind:

"I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well." ~Psalm 139:141

Interesting that fearfully is paired with wonderfully here.

I find it delightful.
