  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am getting an MBA, because most jobs seem to expect one, for post military employment. People also assure me I need to learn to golf. I have been active duty since I was 18, mid thirties now, and honestly I am completely flabbergasted by civilian life. Is this correct, do I need to learn golf? Does business require time on the links?

I sort of fall into the old man category, is this where old men hang out?

Yes, pretty much. Retirement communities aren't built are golf courses for nothing. Anyway, if you walk 18 holes, you get fresh air and exercise, that's some positives.

but to your point, mid-level management and up use golf to socialize and do business. You know, gotta play the 'game' (game as in established norms) in the corporate world. So yes, learn golf, and prepare to experience frustration. :D

What about tennis or raquetball?

I don't think you need to learn how to play golf. All you have to be able to do is spit some conversation and have some drinks. When you golf, most everyone is not that great except for the people that play all the time. Go to the driving range, hit a few balls, but you don't have to be a pro to have a job. All golfing is for business is a way the boys/girls can go out, have some drinks, laugh and then talk business. Most people are cool if you just tell them you don't know how to play, and you can get a lot of points by going out and doing something you've never done. That being said, golfing is fun and is, by far, the most humbling sport out there. Tennis and racquetball are fun, too, but require much more physical exertion and have a higher propensity for injury. All three are loads of fun though. Best of luck and thanks for your service!

I, for one, am not "old" OR a "man" - but I have found golf to be an amazing sport! I hated it - absolutely HATED it, until my Rheumatologist recommended that I play for my RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis). My husband bought me lessons from a local LPGA pro - who has become a life-long friend and golf buddy - and I've been hooked ever since!

I say, rather being on the computer, sign up for some lessons, get some clubs, breathe the fresh air, and get out on the links!! You never know for sure until you try it!

Good luck!!
