My view is that you should not cheat (use infinite health/ammo etc) first time through the game as it takes the challenge away in my view. Mind you some of the cheats can make games more interesting. For example I have Tenchu Stealth assassins (the first one) for the PS1 and got some cheats that let you change the game...even make it harder.

I agree that it takes away from the challenge so I like to play for a while with out them but I like to use them when I start getting tired of a game. what about guides, do they take away from the fun? I use them if I play a level a thousand times (well maybe not that much) and can't figure it out, but other than that I don't like using them.

If you have fun blowing away enemies without having to worry about being hurt and you don't mind a complete lack of challenge, then God-mode won't make a game less fun.

Personally, I absolutly will NOT use a cheat code to get through a game. (Fine, so I cheated on Half-Life... I still never got around to beating it.) After I have beaten a game, I might go back and use cheat codes to have some fun. Plus, some cheats don't really change the challenge. Such as paintball mode.

I actually love cheat codes because I like to get to the end of the game as soon as possible. I hate to have to try and beat some boss 20 thousand times just because you get killed every single time you try! Now, I don't usually use cheats that automatically bring you to the next level because those are just stupid. However, I do like to use cheats that make you invulnerable to enemy attacks and such. Or in case you are talking about city building/rpg type games, I like to use the cheat that makes for faster building. I am an impatient person and so I hate waiting for something like that.... lol.

Depends. I still remember the day I first got that baby on a tricycle with a shotgun in Age of Empires 1, because it was so fun just to roll this little dude around and go shooting people. Easter eggs like this can be fun for a while.

Then there's the cheat codes that makes the game pointless like invincibility, monsters won't attack and a ton of resources.

But certain combinations of cheats can be quite interesting. For example in Jedi Knight 1, slow motion + invincibility + fly = totally way cool Matrix-style slow-mo lightsaber slashing :D

And some cheats actually give the game a slightly more interesting challenge, like completing Quake 2 with only a Machine Gun and Grenades. You can't do that without giving yourself tons of ammo.

And in one most extreme case, cheats actually made the game fair! My friend NeoTrio told me about this DOS game called Fragile Allegiance, where you build asteroid colonies and fight aliens. By default, all the aliens have unlimited resources, unlimited money, full technology tree and full asteroid field map, none of which you have. Cheating, he said, made the game fair.

Cheats only take the fun out of a game if they are forcibly activated. Then they become features. ^_^ Seriously, though, how can a cheat code take the fun out of a game if no one is making you use it? Sometimes, cheats make games accessible to players who otherwise wouldn't bother.

I'm not an action gamer and generally don't play those type games, so I don't have the necessary skills developed that are needed to do well in them. For instance, I bought Ninja Gaiden and I love the game but it is just too hard and I don't care to spend hours fighting the same enemies just to build skills that I most likely won't use much. If there was an easy setting or half damage cheat for more casual gamers, I'd be all over it. As it is, I traded it for Splinter Cell, GTA3 and Nightcaster and I'm having a blast with them.
